As my name is Patrick, I almost (I once couldn't) always post today on St. Patrick's Day.  Here are some highlights:
  • 2009:  St. Patrick was a Roman born in Scotland in 387, and most probably did not scare any snakes out of Ireland (for there never have been any--same for any cold "island" like New Zealand, Iceland, Greenland and Antarctica--Hawaii has the Brahminy Blind Snake), became the Patron Saint of Ireland, for he did start more than 300 churches, and is responsible for the blue in early Irish flags.  Now, however, it is green white and orange:
  • 2010:  The first St. Paddy's day parade occurred in....the USA, in 1737 in Boston, although the largest today took place in New York City.  200,000 participated this morning:

  • 2011:  I was in Beijing, which has continued to have a feud with Google, from where this blog generates.  Thus there were a few days during this period when I couldn't post.  However, the Great Wall of China did turn green tonight (by the magic of time zone differences):
  • 2013:  And I quote:
So how did this European inspire annual drunken bouts in every one of our 50 states (even Utah has a parade and two Irish pubs)? Well, St. Patrick is not unlike St. Nicholas and St. Valentine, in that the marketplace has taken over. In the USA it is more a celebration of enjoying being Irish for a few hours, and the person is just a convenient excuse.
  • 2014:  March 17 also happens to be just about the day when the Honohono Orchid is at peak here.  Pat wearing a Mickey Mouse hat I bought at EPCOT Center on St. Patrick's Day in 2006:

That's not all.  15 Craigside has our St. Patrick's Day celebration, segueing into beef stew for dinner.  What...where are the corned beef and cabbage???  Oh well, who will care about cuisine when soused with Jameson, Tullamore Dew, Bushmills and Connemara Peated Malt.

Honolulu of course, also celebrates this day.  There is the 49th Annual St. Patrick's Day Parade from Noon to 3PM through Waikiki, and, part of downtown Honolulu is block off for Murphy's celebration from 5:30PM

So, to close, earlier this week at the monthly meeting of the 15 Craigside Dining and Nutrition Committee, someone asked why Corned Beef and Cabbage were being served on Tuesday (March 15) and not Thursday (today).  The ensuing discussion led to, for sure, Corned Beef and Cabbage will be featured on 17 March 17.  Return for some photos of our St. Patrick's Day BBQ with Irish Whiskey.

Tropical Cyclone Emeraude is now up to 145 MPH, but is still threatening no one in the Indian Ocean:
