AS 2025 COMES TO A CLOSE

This is Day 3 of our Ritz-Carlton cruise.  Happy New Year!

Lunch yesterday was in the Beach House.  Salad and soup with Bloody Mary and beer.

Lamb chops and salmon.
Shaved ice.

Ended with a cappuccino.
Maybe they have this every afternoon, but there was an incredible late afternoon snack:  caviar, raw oysters, pasta and hamburger,
All that with a New Zealand Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc and Nikka vodka.  Then came "drinks" of Gazpacho and Vichyssoise.  Never these before as cocktails.
Dinner was in the fanciest restaurant  on the ship, Azur.  I was still filled from the caviar snack, so only had soup, salad and mushrooms, with an Australian Shiraz and German Riesling.

Glass of Sauternes at the end.

This was New Year's Eve, but we just went to sleep and skipped all the festivities.  Only walked 2330 steps.

During the COVID Pandemic, my Thursday postings were devoted to this disease, as compiled by Worldometers.  As this is the final day of 2025, I thought I'd go back to review the current status of the World, and will start with COVID-19.

Regarding the two wars, according to Google AI:

"Final Stage" Rhetoric: Both the U.S. and the Kremlin have recently characterized negotiations as being at a "final stage," though key issues like the status of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant and specific withdrawal lines remain unresolved.   Here is President Donald Trump's assessment of the peace deal.

As of January 1, 2026, the Gaza Strip remains in a state of deep instability following over two years of devastating conflict between Israel and Hamas. While a formal ceasefire agreement was implemented on October 10, 2025, hostilities and significant humanitarian suffering continue.

The hottest thing around today?  Labubu dolls.

  • A series featuring zoomorphic elves with exaggerated facial expressions.  The central figure is Labubu, a monster with sharp teeth, large ears and a scruffy appearance.
  • Produced and sold exclusively by China-base retailer PopMart.
  • Created by Hong Kong illustrator Kasing Lung.
    • He was born in 1972 in Hong Kong, but raised in Ultrecht, Netherlands, but settled in Antwerp, Belgium.
    • Was introduced in 2015 in Lung's story series, The Monsters, influenced by Nordic  folklore.
    • By 2025, the brand has released over 300 different figures, ranging in cost from $14 for a tiny vinyl figure to $170,000 for a 4 foot tall mint-green Labubu.
    • Sold in a blind box, meaning you don't know what you will be getting, leading to obsessive collecting.
    • Pop Mart CEO Wang Ning, was only worth $1.8 billion in 2024.  Now is worth $21.1 billion, and at 38 is the youngest Chinese billionaire in the top ten.
    • Some stories.
      • The UK paused selling these dolls in May of this year to prevent multiple reports of customers fighting over them.
      • Russia thought about banning them for the frightening appearance might harm children's mental health.
      • Iraq banned the sale for the dolls caused behavioral problems in children.
      • Very popular in Thailand, sparking belief about the image bringing wealthand good fortune.  Thus, you can find Buddhist amulets and sacred tattoos.
      • Has become a political tool in Singapore.
      • New York magazine's Liza Corsillo wrote that the toy's appeal is fueled by a hard-to-explain cuteness:  kind of ugly, but huggable, with a devilish grin.
      • Counterfeit accessories are also popular.

RITZ-CARLTON LUMINARA Day 1

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht cruise line arranged for us to be picked up at 1:45PM.  Last view of the Marina Bay Sands.

Seamless transfer of luggage to room, but there was so much confusion about processing the paperwork to board the ship.  Everyone was confused, including the staff.

The luggage was in our room when we got on the ship at 1 PM or so.  We thought we'd have lunch at Mistral, which was on the 10th floor.  However, the elevator only traveled to the 9th.  A staff member saw us uncertain about how to get to our restaurant and came to help us.  He said that the back elevator would do the job, so he patiently walked us the length of the ship and up to where we wanted to go.  The other staff seemed overly respectful of him, and we learned why.  He was Captain Tom Roth, who is the leader of this ship.  From Switzerland with a nautical science degree and 30 years of at-sea experience.  Very nice and helpful gentleman.  So we took a photo, the first on this ship.

Lunch of Caesar salad and pizza.
Ship left Singapore at 5PM.  Had a few snacks with scotch over rocks.  There was also a welcome bottle of Moet Champagne on ice waiting in our room, but we'll have that later,

Then dinner at Haetsu Bit.
My first chawan mushi in decades, for they left out the shrimp.  Excellent.
Added hot sake.
Added a New Zealand Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc for my wagyu ramen.
Photo of plate.
One of the very best meals we've ever had.  The cuisine on the Ritz-Carlton Luminara looks to be the finest of any cruise we've taken.  Walked 5448 steps.

Ritz-Carlton entered the cruise market only in 2022 as the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection.  We are on their newest, the Luminara.  Its maiden voyage was in July of this year.  Their other two ships are Evrima and Ilma.

THE RITZ-CARLTON

I should warn you about Singapore.  December is the best month to be here because of the Christmas holiday decorations, plus, it is not uncomfortably hot....just plain hot, typically still up to 90F.  However in the hottest month, June, only goes up to 92F.  But the monsoon season starts in December, where it rains, usually in the later afternoons.

The second day in the Singapore Ritz-Carlton Millennia started with breakfast.  Entrance to hotel from inside.

Lobby area, featuring Chihuly art.
Line for the buffet breakfast.
Entrance to breakfast area.
Noodle maker.
First course of noodles.
Second course of miso soup, rice, Japanese pickles and two eggs over easy.
Third course of bread from India, tart from China and donut from the USA.
Very soon after breakfast, into the Club Lounge for a very light lunch.
Then came dinner in the Club Lounge.
Light show of Singapore Marina Bay from the Ritz-Carlton Club Lounge.
Walked only 1500 steps today.

  • The Ritz-Carlton brand began with Cesar Ritz, born in 1850, who managed The Ritz in Paris and the Carlton Hotel in London.
  • I found it interesting that he seemed to gravitate to work where there were early World Expos, the 1867 Paris Universal Exhibition and 1873 Vienna World's Fair.
    • Marriott in 1998 bought 99% ownership of Ritz-Carlton.
    • The Ritz-Carlton Hong Kong opened in 1993, as the world's highest hotel.  However, it closed in 2009, for that building was demolished, and the current hotel is within the International Commerce Centre tower.  We will be staying there when our upcoming Ritz-Carlton cruise arrives in that port on January 13.
    • There are today 115 R-C hotels.
    • We moved from the Marriott Tang Plaza into the Ritz-Carlton Millennia, in preparation for our R-C Luminara cruise on December 30,
      • A 32-story hotel with 608 rooms located at Marina Centre.
      • Opened in 2011.
      • Has a 4,200-piece modern contemporary art collection, including works by Andy Warhol and Dale Chihuly.
      • Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga stayed there.
      • Video of view from the Ritz-Carlton Millennia.
I asked Google AI, what is there to see next to the Ritz-Carlton Millennia:

Next to The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore, you'll find a wealth of Marina Bay attractions like Gardens by the Bay, ArtScience Museum, Singapore Flyer, and Marina Bay Sands, accessible via sheltered walkways to Millenia Walk and Marina Square malls for shopping/dining, plus iconic sights like the Merlion and vibrant waterfront shows.
    Attractions (Walkable)
    • Gardens by the Bay: Explore Supertree Grove, Cloud Forest, and Flower Dome.
    • ArtScience Museum: Iconic lotus-shaped museum with unique exhibits.
    • Singapore Flyer: Giant observation wheel for panoramic views.
    • Marina Bay Sands: Walk across the Helix Bridge to shops, restaurants, and the rooftop infinity pool.
    • Merlion Park: See Singapore's iconic mythical creature.
    • Esplanade - Theatres on the Bay: Catch a show or enjoy the waterfront area.
    Shopping & Dining
    • Millenia Walk & Marina Square: Directly connected to the hotel for retail and food.
    • The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands: Upscale shopping and dining.
    • Waterfront Promenade: Lively dining options with bay views.
    Evening Entertainment
    Quick Access
    • MRT: Bayfront, Promenade, and Esplanade stations are nearby for easy access to other parts of Singapore.

So where did we go?  Nowhere.  We saw all those sights the last time we were here in 2022.

We board the Ritz-Carlton Luminara today for our two-week cruise to Hong Kong.

Very expensive cruise.  I asked Google AI if this cost was justified.

A two-week Ritz-Carlton Luminara cruise from Singapore to Hong Kong typically starts in the low-to-mid $20,000s per person for base fares, with specific departures in late 2025/early 2026 ranging from around $22,300 to over $25,000 USD, potentially reaching higher for suites, but costs vary by sailing date, suite category, and inclusions. These prices cover luxury accommodations, gourmet dining, beverages, Wi-Fi, water sports, and gratuities as part of their all-inclusive luxury experience.

    Cruising on the
Ritz-Carlton Luminara is worth the high cost for those seeking ultra-luxury, personalized service, exceptional dining, and unique, intimate experiences far from typical large cruise ships, with all-inclusive amenities like spacious suites with balconies, top-tier food, drinks, Wi-Fi, water sports, and gratuities included, offering a "best land resort meets sea travel" vibe, though some guests note potential
inconsistencies compared to land-based Ritz hotels in toiletries or room finishes.
