HAS THE MYSTERY OF AMELIA EARHART BEEN SOLVED?

I regularly have a bento lunch at the Diamond Head Lookout.

This is my view.

So right next to me is this plaque, which commemorates the first solo flight from Hawaii to North American in 1935 by Amelia Earhart.  She Piloted a Lockheed Vega right over this spot on her way to Oakland.  From my posting of 9June2016:
About her around the world adventure two years later in 1937 with Fred Noonan, she arrived in Lae, New Guinea:  and I myself once had too much of an adventure here. They next headed for Howland Island, and disappeared.

There are at least eight conspiracy theories, ranging from being kidnapped by aliens to capture by Japanese troops leading to her becoming one of the Tokyo Roses to....

Well, yesterday it was announced that Deep Sea Vision of South Carolina, using an unmanned, underwater drone, scanned more than 5200 square miles of the Pacific Ocean last year, and company founder Tony Romeo believes after leaving Papua New Guinea Amelia Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan headed for Howland Island to refuel, but never arrived, and they recorded sufficient imagery of what could be Earhart's Lockheed 10-E Electra.

The exact location wasn't revealed, but could be as shown below.  Howland Island is misspelled, and one crash site was a 2019 speculation.

In 1999, Dana Timmer led a $1 million deep-sea search, and recorded some promising sonar images, but was unable to raise funds to confirm.  Nauticos conducted expeditions in 2002, 2005 and 2017, but only found shipping trash.  Romeo (left) spent $11 million and hopes to return to confirm their discovery.

So has the mystery been solved? Not quite yet.  Plus, hints are there that the plane is at a depth of 16,000 feet, so raising the plane will take maybe hundreds of millions of dollars.

The most noteworthy film about her was the 2009 Amelia, with Hilary Swank the lead, Richard Gere. Ewan McGregor and Christopher Eccleston as Fred Noonan.  Alas, Rotten Tomatoes gave it 19/31 scores, so nothing you will particular enjoy.  Should you want more, there is a Library of Congress Collection about her.

THE END OF DONALD TRUMP: Mysogynist and Sexual Predator

I yesterday posted on the Trials and Tribulations of Donald Trump.  Inserted was the following:

Four years ago, Donald Trump was up to 18 women who have accused him of varying inappropriate sexual behavior.  EIGHTEEN!!!  Click on that link to read the details and see their photo.  E. Jean has been coy about what she will do with the $88.3 million she will eventually get.  She is now 80 years old.  Not much time to do much with those funds when they become available.  One sure way to seriously bedevil Trump would be to someday soon announce that most this money will be provided to those women who need legal assistance to similarly go after Trump and his billions. Oh, an update, I found a 2023 article indicating that this number was not 18, but 26.  One of them was Ivana Trump, mother of Don Jr., Eric and Ivanka.

I thought the repercussions from his failed attempted coup on 6January2021 would be his ultimate downfall.  Could well be, but it would be deserving, indeed, if that E. Jean Carroll double-barreled court case judgements against him for $88.3 million might well become lead to his political demise.

Of course, he is not in the class of Harvey Weinstein, who triggered the hashtag #MeToo Weinstein Effect, which finally changed attitudes on acceptable conduct from powerful men in prominent positions.  Over a period of 30 years, he preyed on women in the film industry, confirmed by 107 women.  Included were Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonham Carter, Daryl Hannah, Salma Hayek, Anne Heche, Paris Hilton, Angelina Jolie, Ashley Judd, Madonna, Lupita Nyong'o, Gwyneth Paltrow, Mira Sorvino and Uma Thurman. He denied all allegations, but is now in jail, and will be there for another 18 years.

Yesterday E. Jean Carroll vowed to use the $83 million on "something Donald Trump hates."

"If it'll cause him pain for me to give money to certain things, that's my intent," Carroll told George Stephanopoulos on "Good Morning America," suggesting she would create a "fund for the women who have been sexually assaulted by Donald Trump."

How soon can her campaign to break Trump begin?  Right now.  This will now be a team effort with Carroll and her lawyers.  They might not get millions for a while, but no matter, for they will someday prevail and can get started building a case.  There are ways to create funds through the world wide web, and millions of females, plus a few males, will only be too glad to contribute to this cause.

Should this occur, can you imagine how tied up Trump will be in yet another court trial?  About Weinstein:

On March 11, 2020, Weinstein was sentenced to 23 years in prison. His sentences are consecutive, meaning he has to serve 20 years in prison for the criminal sexual act conviction and then three years in prison for the rape conviction. Each sentence includes five years of supervised release, and Weinstein also has to register as a sex offender.

Weinstein’s lawyers have been trying to appeal his conviction. They first filed an appeal in April 2021, arguing that the judge made mistakes that denied Weinstein’s right to a fair trial, but the five-judge panel of the New York Supreme Court’s Appellate Division, First Department unanimously rejected it. New York’s highest court, the Court of Appeals, agreed in August 2022 to hear Weinstein’s appeal.

So can Weinstein still get out?  Well, there was another trial in Los Angeles.  Took almost two years, but on 19December2022:

Weinstein was sentenced to 16 years in prison. His sentence in California also has to be served consecutively, which means that it will only start after Weinstein completes his 23-year sentence in New York.

Weinstein’s lawyers said last month that they planned to file an appeal against his LA convictions as well.

So how are his appeals doing?   It appears that Weinstein will spend the rest of his life in prison.

Returning to Donald Trump and his presidential campaign, how's about this headline?

Taylor Swift Causes MAGA Meltdown

There is a sub-heading:  Get Ready for the WOKE Super Bowl.  The MAGA movement reacted to the Kansas Chiefs victory, noting how Swift showed up on the field to kiss Travis Kelce, by blaring a conspiracy:  this entire relationship is a contrived con-job to make the NFL money and to re-elect Joe Biden! Huh???  There are different variations, but here is one:

That Biden wanted to find a way to chip away at the MAGA base of beer drinking, white male football fans by luring an immensely popular NFL star like Travis Kelce into the fold. Who better to do for Deep State operatives than a beautiful, wealthy, and talented pop star? They point to the additional "evidence" that Kelce is now a major endorser for Bud Light and the Pfizer covid vaccine. These right-wing conspiracy theorists then believe that, close to the presidential election, Swift and Kelce will join forces in an effort to register and turn out a massive number of Swifties and football fans to vote for Joe Biden.

...the fear among MAGA is that Swift may take her activism one step further in this election in order to finally vanquish Trump, and if she is joined by Kelce that would make her message that much more effective. It remains to be seen whether Swift will actually do that, but all the signs are there that she is ready to get more openly involved this time around. Whether Kelce chooses to do so is very much an open question, since he has said almost nothing publicly about politics. However, becoming the face of brands hated by right-wingers like Pfizer and Bud Light is an ominous sign for them.

THE FURTHER TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS OF DONALD TRUMP

The trials and tribulation of Donald Trump continue this week:

  • Last week he was found liable for $83.3 million in the E. Jean Carroll defamation case.  And, by the way, that $5 million awarded to her had to be paid, and will be held by the state pending appeal.  The same will occur this time too, which means that Trump will need to sell something to meet that need.  I might add a thing or two about Carroll.
    • There is a photo of Trump and Carroll (circled) in the 1980's when she was in her 40's.  She was then writing for Saturday Night Live.  She looked pretty attractive.
    • She has been twice divorced, the second one in 1990.
    • In the mid-90's she was host and producer of the Ask E. Jean television series aired on NBC's American's Talking, the predecessor to MSNBC.  She won a CableACE Award in 1995.
    • The incident occurred around 1995, or 1996.
    • Carroll was one of 13 women who accused CBS Corporation executive Les Moonves of sexual assault in 2019.  Occurred in the late 1990's in a hotel elevator.  He denied the allegation.

  • On Wednesday or so, another New York case, a state civil lawsuit seeking $370 million will be announced by Judge Arthur Engoron, where it is only a judge that is involved, no jury.
    • He has on numerous occasions insulted the judge, and New York Attorney General Letitia James.
    • Engoron already ruled last September that Trump had committed fraud.
    • He and his sons, Junior and Eric, will be no doubt be fined around $400 million and probably banned from doing business in the state of New York.
    • Now he really will have to sell something.
  • Next on March 25 will also be in New York, the Stormy Daniels (also called Stephanie Clifford) hush-money case, where there is a criminal charge that he concealed this affair to preserve his 2016 presidential campaign.
    • He was already indicted on 30March2023.
    • This was the very first of his 91 criminal charges.  Keep in mind that he is the very first former president to EVER face any criminal charge.
    • Interesting participant will be his then-lawyer Michael Cohen, who is just happy to be alive today.
    • Trump has also crudely insulted Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.
  • The Georgia case is proposed for televised jury trial on August 5, a couple of weeks after he is selected as the Republican nominee for president.
    • 13 charges on racketeering.
    • That audio recording seeking votes is awfully condemning.
    • When you add all those other associated activities, he is doomed in this state, and especially so, for even if he is re-elected president, would not be able to pardon himself.
    • There could be a delay while Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis sorts out her improper relationship scandal.  Even if removed, the Republican State Governor Brian Kemp is not a fan of Trump, and will appoint someone else to continue the effort.
  • There is that classified documents case in Florida, now going in circles because of U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon, who is a Trump fan, and will almost surely delay proceedings on March 1 regarding the proposed May 20 trial date.  At worst, Trump would get a wrist-slap, so this case is expendable.
  • The truly big one is the Department of Justice allegation that Trump's action led to the 6January2021 attack on the Capitol, as part of his coup scheme to stay in power.
    • Only four charges at this time.
    • Trump vs Jack Smith.
    • Judge Tanya Chutkan indicated the March 4 trial date will probably be delayed, pending action by a 3-federal judge panel to determine if Trump is immune from prosecution.
    • A ruling is expected any day, like this week, and they will almost surely indicate that Trump is not immune.
    • Then, up to the Supreme Court, which I think will do one of two things:
      • Decline to judge on the appeal, allowing the result of the panel ruling to apply, meaning that Trump will not be immune.
      • After a while, probably into the summer, eventually determine that Trump is not immune.  They are not great supporters of Trump's personal problems.  I'm sure they are concerned about the future of democracy.

All of the above, and Trump will almost certainly be voted-in as the Republican nominee for president on July 18 in Milwaukee.  Notice how more and more his public appearances show too much anger, incoherence and vitriol?  Also, he is 78, and the weight of those cases and campaign is affecting his physical and mental health.

Maybe I'm too harsh with Trump.  To end, then, making poetry great again.

Super Bowl LVIII will kick off at 6:30PM ET on Sunday, February 11, at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.  The Kansas City Chiefs vs San Francisco 49ers.  Both teams are in my favorite three.  I'll wear red that day.  Travis Kelce got rewarded.  But she's schedule to be in Tokyo for a concert on February 10.  Will she be able to return for the game?

It's still not too late to get tickets:

Official tickets and hospitality packages to watch the match in-person are available via On Location, as well as on resale sites such as TicketMaster, Vivid Seats, Seat Geek and Stubhub—with prices currently ranging from around $7,000 at the lowest end to as high as $90,000.

At this time, the 49ers are favored by 2 points.  More to come on those ridiculous propositions.  Have a tour of Allegiant Stadium.

There is a powerful ocean storm in the Indian Ocean.  Cyclone Anggrek was up to 130 MPH yesterday, but weakened to 120 MPH today, and is thankfully in the middle of nowhere.
