DAY 9: Kilauea could blow its top soon, hurl rocks and ash

Well, anyway, that was one of the headlines in the Honolulu Star Advertiser this morning.  They need to sell newspapers.  The flow in Puna has paused and the pentane has been removed from the Puna Geothermal Ventures facility.  Read what the USGS has to say.

It is ominous that the latest fissure, #15, is the one closest to the geothermal power plant:

Note fissure 15 near the Hinalo St and Pohoiki Rd intersection.

Still at the heart of the crisis is Mayor Harry Kim, all of 78 years old.  He was a Hilo High School classmate of Pearl, and he has not changed since those days.  That photo to the left is from almost a third of century ago.  He just had two heart attacks, but returned to calm his constituency.

I also noticed that next door to Singapore, where the Donald Trump - Kim Jung-un summit will occur on June 12, is Malaysia, where their old, really old former prime minister, Mahathir Mohamad, at the age of 92, just got re-sworn-in as their new PM.  He is now the world's oldest leader.
