DAY 22: Kilauea Volcano Eruption in Puna
Today begins the fourth week of the Puna eruption. No major changes. The scene is looking more and more like Dante's Inferno, with rivers of lava flowing into the ocean. The Puna Geothermal Venture power plant is still untouched, but headlines worry about toxic gases if the site is covered. Not sure what they're talking about. Any geothermal region has the smell of hydrogen sulfide, (rotten egg), with a slight odor of burning matches (sulfur dioxide). Now that all the wells are plugged, lava inundation of the facility will only omen the end of geothermal energy in Hawaii for a long time to come.
