9/11

Day 132 of the Lower Puna Eruption, and the Star-Advertiser had another human interest story of recovery.

It was 17 years ago today that my wife Pearl woke me up at just around 3AM in Honolulu and said something serious was happening.  She almost never watches TV at that time of the morning.  An airplane apparently had just crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center.  One of our most memorable dinners was in Windows of the World at the top of that building.

Then at 3:03 AM a second plane slammed into floors 75-85 of the South Tower.  We stayed in bed for the next six hours in semi-shock.

So here I am on 9/11 and plan to find my way to One World Trade Center, the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere (and sixth in the world), 1776 feet high (1792 ft to the tip), 109 floors (five below ground level).  I've been watching CNN covering the solemn ceremonies at the site of the tragedy, a day when there were four terrorist attacks killling just under 3,000, injuring 6,000, and causing $10 billion in infrastructure damage.

I will later today, or tomorrow, provide my personal experience.  Otherwise, here is the schedule for the rest of my stay in New York City:

• Wednesday:  tour through the City, followed by The Book or Mormon, a broadway show. 
• Thursday:  tour to West Point
• Friday:  Statue of Liberty and other sites, followed by Beautiful, the Carole King musical.
• Saturday:  back to West Point for the football game between Army and Hawaii.
• Sunday:  Yankee Stadium and a baseball game featuring the New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays.
• Monday:  return to Honolulu.

Hurricane Florence is now at Category 4 and could well become a 5 before crashing into the coastal areas of the Carolinas and Virginia early Friday morning.
