I remember Tap Pryor, who ran a successful seafood operation in Hawaii, started Sea Life Park, Oceanic Institute and what is now Makai Ocean Engineering, He also served in the Hawaii State Legislature. In 1966 he was on the Stratton Commission, which established national priorities for the ocean. He rather suddenly in the 70's moved to the Cook Islands. Still there, I guess. He must be all of 80 by now.
The 15 islands have become a center for international financing, serving as a tax haven, and show potential for seabed minerals. Tourism is of course important, but as a best kept secret.

| Named after Captain COOK, who sighted them in 1770, the islands became a British protectorate in 1888. By 1900, administrative control was transferred to New Zealand; in 1965, residents chose self-government in free association with New Zealand. The emigration of skilled workers to New Zealand and government deficits are continuing problems. |
