The Wife 84% 78% #22 B-
El Angel 74% 84% ?? C+
The are both R-rated, but El Angel is bloody and gruesome, while The Wife is only suggestive. While I can't seem to find El Angel on Box Office Mojo, The Wife is #22, primarily because it has been out now for 17 weeks.
There are a lot of familiar actors in The Wife, although you'd hardly recognize some of them. For example, Jonathan Pryce, who has been in a hundred films, TV programs and Broadway shows, seemed familiar as the Nobel Prize awardee, while Christian Slater does well as a scum-seeking biographer, and Elizabeth McGovern has grown so old. Glenn Close, to the contrary, has aged well, and could well get nominated for an Oscar next year. She plays the ghostwriter for her husband, the Nobel Laureate.
El Angel, an Argentinian-Spanish production, should not be confused with The Angel, an American-Israeli spy-thriller, as both were released around the same time, with the latter actually gaining an 80% reviewers' rating from Rotten Tomatoes. El Angel is inspired from the story of a youthful Argentine serial killer, and has been nominated as the Argentina entry for the 91st Academy Awards, which will be held on 24 February 2019.
