SATURDAY TRIVIA ABOUT HAWAII, JAPAN AND SUICIDES

1.  The first two deal with Hawaii:

    a.  The Hawaii State Legislature this session approved returning 200 acres of ceded land worth perhaps $200 million to "the Hawaiians."  Much of this land has huge financial potential.  In New Zealand, you've  got to wonder who was negotiating for the Maori tribes, but the federal government transferred ownership of 14 volcanic cones to 13 iwi (tribes).  At least that was yesterday reported by Bloomberg, and has to be some kind of joke, right?  Well, no, for, actually, more than 400,000 acres are involved, and some valuable forestry plantations are part of the deal.

    b.  The May issue of Honolulu matter of factly graded all 258 public schools, and you need to search down to #130, Mililani High, to find the first high school.  It got a C grade.  #230, Kapolei High, received a D-, while Kauai High, Kaimuki High, Hilo High and Castle High were given F's.  My former school McKinley High got a D.  Punahou is not a public school.  I should also report that 8 elementary schools were rated A+, with #1 being Momilani (in Pearl City).  The first non-elementary was Aiea Intermediate, #41, B.  What is happening to our high schools?

2.  Japan:

    a.  Japan has 50 nuclear powerplants, all currently shut down because of Fukushima.  Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda made a fervent plea on national television advocating the re-start-up of two nuclear reactors in Ohi (left),

Fukui Prefecture, where clustered along a 34 mile stretch facing the Sea of Japan are 13 of these reactors.  This coastline is known as Genpatsu Ginza, or NUCLEAR ALLEY.  Odds are the details have been worked out for this approval, very soon.  The problem faced by Noda is that 80% are against turning on these nuclear facilities.

    b.  Here is what might appears to be a shocker.  Japan reports that, for the 14th year in a row, more than 30,000 committed suicide in 2011.  Similarly, the Pentagon says our military averages one suicide per day, which would mean around 350/year.  As Japan has approximately 100 times more people than we have active duty servicepeople, this rate would be the equivalent of 35,000/year, which is the annual suicide rate in the USA.  Or in suicides/year/ 1000 people:

  Japan              0.23
  USA                0.11
  Military            0.25

Hawaii is at 0.09, while, of all things, the lowest is in the District of Columbia with 0.06.

It is worse elsewhere:

  Lithuana         0.34
  South Korea   0.31

In general, men commit suicide twice as frequently as women, but this factor is around five for the former Soviet countries.  Haiti, Honduras and Greneda had zero suicides, while the rate for Egypt and Syria was 0.0001.

Finally, yes, dentistry is a dangerous profession, as the suicide rate is 6.64 times higher than of the average worker in the U.S.  And if I properly read that article, white female doctors had double the suicide rate of dentists.  Hmm...what about female dentists?
