1. Well, this is Friday the 13th, and I'm ready to board a flight from Honolulu to San Francisco. Many look upon this day with at least mild trepidation. Me? I refer you to F12 jokes, though most are pretty lame.
2. Whether it is bottom kill or final fix for the BP well in the Gulf, it doesn't matter. Can you imagine how much oil is continously leaking? There are 27,000 abandoned and deteriorating wells, plus the natural seepage, of course.
3. Remember that dreaded swine flu? Well, the World Health Organization of the United Nations this week declared that the pandemic is over...even though it never happened. The latest newsworthy item is that five WHO advisors are linked to vaccine producers. Ah, but you say 18,000 people died from this dangerous virus. Sure, but in this same period 20 times more people succumbed to the common flu.
In the UK, more than half of their experts providing key input to their federal government had links to these companies. And here I was flabbergasted that any unit of the UN had the balls to make any decision at all, for this was not only unusual, but unprecedented. Now we know why. American sources say that 70 million dosages will need to be discarded by the end of the year, worth about half a billion dollars. This is half the amount the UK alone will dispose. So we are talking billions of dollars essentially wasted when the odds of the virus mutating was infinitesimal. My 29July2010 blog goes into some detail, but I've been saying this since 25April2009. So what's next? Try ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANT GERMS. Apparently, there is a new bacterial scourge, of course, again from the Orient (although this one seems to originate in Pakistan and India). Those pharmaceutical think tanks have struck again!

4. 7.2 earthquake, off Guam just happened...but no tsunami.
5. It has almost been 18 months since the inauguration of President Barack Obama, and he has accomplished miracles:
a. Saved the World from a real depression.
b. Enacted a nation health plan.
c. Appointed and got approved two female Supreme Court Justices.
d. Extracted $20 billion from BP, and might get some credit for plugging up the leaking well.
e. Won a Nobel Prize.
f. Is a lot more popular around the world than George W. Bush.

His 82% approval rating at the beginning has declined to the low to mid 40's, according to Fox News and the Wall Street Journal. But what do you expect from such conservative/republican sources? What does Rasmussen report? 47%...not much different.
Thus, it is no surprise that I, too, am disappointed. We wanted change, and got some, but not enough. Sure, Robert Gates will cut $10 billion in defense spending, but will re-invest this savings into more weapons. Our only enemies are rag-tag terrorists. Please go to the 10% solution. And about that lethal Chinese missile to make aircraft carriers obsolete? Aircraft carriers are obsolete, as they have been for decades.
I can go on to global warming, an energy policy, Mexican/Latin America immigration, campaign spending, true rebuilding of the national infrastructure, the war in Afghanistan, disappointment of liberals, etc., etc. etc. But, for now, let's blame the Republicans. The leading party always suffers in mid-term elections, so begin gearing up for 2012 when the world is coming to an end, at least according to Mayan prophecy.

The Dow Jones Industrials dropped 17 to 10,303, while world markets were mixed. Gold rose $3/toz to $1216, while crude oil is now at $75/barrel.
