IT'S A STERLING FRIDAY...AND THE WORLD IS A BETTER PLACE TODAY

Although I've now been retired for more than 20 years, Friday remains as my best day of the week.  My apartment is cleaned, bed remade and towels replaced. I tend to have my best meal of the week on Friday nights.  I once golfed a lot on this day.  I'm happier on Fridays.

This morning I awoke, turned on the TV to Classic Arts Showcase, and first on were Sarah Brightman and Andrea Bocelli singing Con Te Partiro.  That was Tuscany in 1997.  Did you know she's already 60 years old?  He is 62 and became blind from a football (soccer) accident at the age of 12.  His duet with Celine Dion of The Prayer came the following year.

The World is today a better place because the U.S. not only just rejoined the Paris Agreement on Climate Change, but also the global humanity.  President Joe Biden virtually met with other G7 leaders and made progress on pandemic recovery and vaccine plans.

Next, NASA success.  The Perseverance rover landed exactly where it was supposed to on Mars, and sent a photo back to Earth.  From the New York Times:
Further:
  • It took around 7 months to get to Mars, but a signal with that photo came back in only 13 minutes.
  • This is why the size of our Milky Way and Universe are so mind-boggling.  Light, or an electronic signal, would take 100,000 years to get from one end to the other.  And we are only one of 125 billion or so galaxies.
  • A message from our nearest neighbor Andromeda would take 2.5 million years to get here.  Homo sapiens, us, appeared 250,00 years ago.
  • You can see the Orion Nebula.  If you wanted to communicate with a civilization there, it would take 1500 years for a signal to reach them.  Then if some intelligent life did detect it and responded, another 1500 years to get back.  Those 3000 years would equivalently take us to 1000 BC when:
    • The world population was 50 million.
    • David became King of Israel.
    • Phoenicians invented the alphabet.
Texas snowstorm?  Donald Trump would have joked about global warming.  One conspiracy theory has Joe Biden manipulating the jet stream to punish Texas for not supporting him.
Well, blame the polar vortex, again.  The term originated in 1853.  I would try to explain to you what this is, but it will only further confuse you.  Anyway, it seems that rapid heating of the Arctic does push frigid air away from the north pole.  So global warming is causing abnormally low winter temperatures further south.

I've been posting on Naomi Osaka the past couple of days, so here is one more:
  • Two years ago I introduced Naomi Osaka.
    • She was born in Osaka, Japan of a Haitian father, Leonard Francois,  and Japanese mother, Tamaki Osaka.  Living in Japan, Naomi and her older sister Mari had to use the the name of the mother.
    • At the age of 3 the family moved to New York to stay with her father's parents.  Interestingly enough, Francois, who didn't know how to play tennis, read that the Williams sisters were taught by their father, who also was not a player.
    • A few years later, the family moved to Florida to be closer to real coaches.
    • Two years ago, Naomi made the choice to play for Japan in the Summer Olympics.
    • The World Tennis Association (WTA) has Ashleigh Barty of the Australia as #1, Osaka at #3 and Jennifer Brady, (right), 25, of the USA, at #24.  Should you want to watch the Osaka-Brady women's finals of the Australian Open, this match will be on ESPN2 Saturday morning at 10:30AM (EST, or 5:30 AM in Hawaii).
    • Something you no doubt didn't know.  Sophia Kenin is the ONLY American female in the top 10 WTA ranking.  Serena Williams is #11.
    • Here is something even more disconcerting.  The Association of Tennis (this is the entity that ranks men's tennis) has Novak Djokovic at #1.  He is from Serbia and is 34 years old.
      • Best American?  John Isner at #24.  He is 35 and 6'10' tall.
      • In 2018, 25 Americans were in the top 200, the most since 2002,  All but three are older than 28.
      • Only one American made the list of 10 newcomers to watch in 2021.  Brandon Nakashima (right) is 19, originally from San Diego and ranked #133.
  • The U.S. hasn't won the Davis Cup (determines best tennis nation in world) since 2007.
  • We have been world champs 32 times, while #2 Australia has 28 victories.  So at one time we were at the top.
  • What happened to the USA?  Read a 2013 article:  Why is American Tennis Dying?
    • Had to show a photo of Trump at tennis.
    • It's not the money, because Roger Federer is second to Tiger Woods.
    • Four of five richest female ATHLETES are tennis players.
  • Here is a hopeful Forbes article from 2019.
  • Coco Grauff of the USA as a 15-year old defeated Osaka (right) in the third round of the Australian Open last year.  Earlier, she upset Venus Williams (who was 24 years older) at Wimbledon in 2019.  Grauff lost in the second round this year in Australia.  She is ranked #48 today, and is struggling.  However, she is still only 16.
I'll end with a Did You Know:

On the other hand, according to this article, there is no black rose.  Halfeti became a new place in 2001 when the country dammed the Euphrates, flooding the town.  In a way, this so-called black rose is a tourist attraction, partly to support their economy.  But here is the real look of this Turkish black rose.

Well, that was a disappointment.  What about this photo of a dog running back into a burning home to save a kitten?

However, the consensus opinion from Reddit is...nope, not true.

Okay, what about this one?

Snopes responds yes and no.  Sure, a person could be kept alive for an indeterminate period of time on that diet.  But some nutrients are missing, and remaining alive and remaining healthy are two very different things.  I've also checked other sources, and no one mentions the need for water.  But potatoes are 80% water, so I guess the potatoes/butter combination might be enough.  Certainly during a drought or famine.

But I need one Did You Know which is 100% true, so what about?

Yes, this is true.  An interesting question is, does the human eye or the best cameras have more pixels?  The answer today is us.  Our competition:
  • Hasselblad H6D-400C Multi-Shot = 400 Megapixels.
  • Fujifilm Phase One XT = 151 MP
  • Sony A7R IV = 61 MP
  • my iPhone 7 = 12 MP
But that Hasselblad costs $48,000.  If you can't afford that, you can rent one for $480/day.  I'm not sure what I paid for my iPhone 7, but today it costs around $100, and takes great photos.

WHO IS NAOMI OSAKA?

This past November I posted:

     WHO IS RUI HACHIMURA?

For some reason, this article got a lot of visits.  This week, from ABC News:

Hachimura dribbled into the lane, did a 180-degree spin and flipped the ball over his shoulder with his back to the basket for an impressive layup that quieted the raucous Leavey Center crowd.

Hachimura finished with 16 points, Josh Perkins had 18 points and eight assists, and every Gonzaga starter scored in double figures as Gonzaga rolled past Santa Clara 98-39 on Thursday night.
"We talked before the game and we made the statement that we're the No. 1 team in the country," Hachimura said. "From the jump to the end, we were really trying to dominate every position."
Actually, they only rank #4 nationally, but Hachimura, who turns 21 next week, leads Gonzaga in scoring at 20 points per game, with just about a 60% shooting accuracy.  Above, Hachimura with Japanese family.  His father is from the Republic of Benin in West Africa.

The rarity of a world-class part-Japanese basketball player is exceeded by 21-year old Naomi Osaka in tennis, who stands an inch under 6 feet.  Like Rui, Naomi's mother is Japanese, but her father, Leonard Francois, comes from Haiti.  Athletics, one benefit for Japan opening up immigration.  However, she has lived in the USA from the age of three.

While she began to show some excellence at the age of 17, she stunned the world by winning the 2018 U.S. Open and 2019 Australian Open.  Naomi is expected to be #1 when the Women's World Tennis Association rankings come out on Monday.

She recently was portrayed in a Nissin Cup Noodle advertisement as whitish, as was Kei Nishikori, an outstanding Japanese male tennis player, who is ranked #8 in the world.

I'm Tan, it's pretty obvious.

She said that her Japanese sponsor apologized to her.  Here, a photo of Osaka with Serena Williams after the 2018 US Open.

A FEW THIS AND THATS

I yesterday featured China's really big parade.  Here are some highlights.

Today, a few this and thats entering the weekend.  About those Trump tariffs, here is one summary.  Countries with the largest trade deficits.  From the New York Times this morning.  China is #1.
The National Football League begins today:
  • Hawaii's home team, because of QB Tua Tagovailoa, has become the Miami Dolphins.  They play the Baltimore Colts at 7AM on CBS, our local time.
  • The Monday night game on ESPN is at 8:15PM EDT, Vikings at Bears.
  • I decided not to have any NFL fantasy teams this year, mostly because I'll be away on two trips in October, November, December and January.
  • Super Bowl LX will be on February 8, Levi's Stadium, Santa Clara, California.
    • Half-time show?  Not selected yet, but it well could be Taylor Swift.  BTS?  Google AI Overview says:
Yes, there is a chance BTS could perform at the 2026 Super Bowl Halftime Show. Billboard has listed BTS as one of their top picks for the event, with their return to full activity scheduled for spring 2026 after completing their military service, which aligns perfectly with the February Super Bowl.
    • Want to attend?  Click on this.

        • $6,925.
      • 50-yard line, plus the above services....call for pricing.
  • By the way, you must know that Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce are officially engaged.
The U.S. Tennis Open concludes this weekend, with the Women's Singles Final at 4PM EDT on Saturday, followed by the Men's Singles Final on Sunday, also at 4PM, on Sunday.  All matches on ESPN.
  • Women's first semi-final match, Jessica Pegula (USA) vs last year's champ, Aryna Sabalenka (Belarus) at 1PM ET today.  The women's side has been complicated by the resurgence of Naomi Osaka (Japan), seeded #23, playing Amanda Anisimova (USA), who upset Iga Swiatek.  The two played in the Wimbledon Finals in July, with Switek demolishing Anisimova, 6-0, 6-0 in less than an hour.  Osaka vs Animisova match will be on ESPN at 2:10PM EDT, also today.  But maybe not, and could start at 2:30PM.  Very confusing.
  • Men's semifinal:  Novak Djokovic (Serbia) vs Carlos Alcaraz (Spain) at 3PM EDT on Friday, with Jannik Sinner (Italy) vs Felix Auger-Aiassime (Canada) following at 7PM.  Sinner is the favorite to win it all.

The top series on Netlix today is Wednesday, now into Season 2, Rotten Tomatoes 78/80, with at #2, My Life with the Walter Boys, RT 54/66, while the top two films are The Thursday Murder Club, RT 77/54, and KPop Demon Hunter, RT 98/99:  Animated with infectious energy and vibrant colors, KPop Demon Hunters is jaunty family entertainment with a terrific soundtrack to boot.  But it's animated.

On Amazon Prime, the top two series are The Summer I Turned Pretty, now into Season 3, RT 75/63, and The Terminal List:  Dark Wolf, RT 73/83, while the top two films are The Map That Leads to You, RT 36/59, and The Pickup, RT 25/36.

  • Nothing much.
  • I actually watched the brand new The Pickup.  And it wasn't that bad.  Eddie Murray as a cash truck security guard.
  • Coincidentally, last night I also saw Wrath of Man, a 2021 film starring Jason Statham, a cash truck security guard.  Rotten Tomatoes 68/90.  The 90 score was about right, if you can tolerate gore and killings and stuff like that.  These two films are about as different as you can get with the same setting.
  • Yes, a double-bill on Prime, with your own popcorn and drinks, might make for a terrific weekend night.

Hurricane Kiko was up to 145 MPH earlier, but has already weakened to 130 MPH, and expected to lose hurricane strength before approaching the Big Island of Hawaii, then Maui, on Tuesday, September 9.

Further in the East Pacific, Tropical Storm Lorena will soon attain hurricane strength, but is expected to weaken and mosey through the west coast of Baja.

BREAKING IN THE PARIS OLYMPICS

I was all set today to write a solid science posting, toying with the coming of giant Joro spiders, but was thumbing through my unread magazines piling up from my global journey, and one article caught my fancy.  First, did you know that the Paris Summer Olympics will begin on July 27?

  • In 776 BC, the first Greek Olympics, and for the next dozen to follow, there was only one event.  The stadion was a foot race of 600 feet.
  • A century ago, in the Paris Summer Olympics of 1924, they had tug of war, croquet and something called jeu de paume, although this latter sport was just for exhibition.  The last time this "tennis" type game was official was in the 1908 London Olympics.
  • The modern Olympics returned in 1896 with 43 events in nine sports.
  • This year, there will be 32 different sports for 329 medal events.  In 2020 Tokyo, 33 sports and 339 events.
  • However, no more baseball (Major League teams complained), softball is gone, and so is karate.  But not to fret, as the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics will bring back baseball (even though the Major League is still moaning) and softball, plus cricket, flag football, lacrosse and squash.
  • The new sports in Paris will be skateboarding, surfing, sport climbing....and, get ready for this....breakdancing.  Interestingly enough, the LA Olympics will drop breaking, but keep the other three new ones.
  • So here are the 32:
Aquatics (Swimming, Marathon Swimming, Diving, Water Polo, Artistic Swimming)
Archery
Athletics
Badminton

Basketball (3x3, Basketball)
Boxing
Breaking
Canoe (Canoe Sprint, Canoe Slalom)
Cycling (BMX Freestyle, BMX Racing, Road Cycling, Track Cycling)
Equestrian (Equestrian Eventing, Equestrian Dressage, Equestrian Jumping)
Fencing
Football (which is soccer for the rest of the world)
Golf
Gymnastics (Artistic Gymnastics, Rhythmic Gymnastics, Trampoline Gymnastics)
Handball
Hockey
Judo
Modern Pentathlon
Rowing
Rugby (Rugby Sevens)
Sailing
Shooting
Skateboarding
Sport Climbing
Surfing
Table Tennis
Taekwondo
Tennis
Triathlon
Volleyball (Beach Volleyball, Volleyball)
Weightlifting
Wrestling (Greco-Roman Wrestling, Freestyle Wrestling)

NBC and Peacock will present live coverage of the Opening Ceremony on Friday, July 26, beginning at noon ET. Telemundo will provide Spanish-language coverage beginning at 1 p.m. ET. Primetime coverage will begin at 7:30 p.m. ET/PT on NBC and Peacock.

Breakdancing is called breaking in Paris, the more popular term today.  Here is that Time magazine article.  I'll summarize:

  • The presentation features Grace Sunny Choi.
    • Born in Cookeville, Tennessee to PhDs from Daegu, South Korea.
    • Family moved to Kentucky.
    • All four children took piano lessons.
    • Sunny, now 35, became a serious gymnast until she hurt her knee as a teenager.  Began to experience periods of intense depression, including suicidal thoughts.
    • At the University of Pennsylvania as a freshman got into breaking, created by Black and Latino youths in New York City half a century ago.
    • Worked and danced, while depression kept returning.
    • Chose dancing over marriage, kids, etc.  A crazy dream.
    • Won the first gold medal ever for breaking at the 2023 Pan American Games.  This is why she automatically qualified for Paris.  Here is a CNN video about her, but the first half is just regular news.
    • Now has sponsorship deals with Nike and Samsung.
    • Sees a therapist, paid for by the U.S. Olympic Committee, to minimize her mental health problems.
      • Has helped confront her fear of failure.
      • Naomi Osaka in tennis, Simone Biles gymnastics and Michael Phelps swimming also suffered from mental problems.
      • There are 15 mental health providers employed by the Committee.
    • When not dancin', she was director of global creative operations at Estée Lauder, until she quit last year to focus on her sport.
    • Called a B-girl for guess what?
    • Is 5'1", eats a lot of salmon and is a medal contender in Paris.
  • Breaking will occur in the Place de la Concorde, the largest public square in Paris.  Seats are sold out.
  • Breaking is not like gymnastics where points accrue.  Format is head-to-head competition.
