How far did the Diamond Princess travel?
- Yokohama to Okinawa: 839 nautical miles
- Okinawa to Keelung: 327 nautical miles
- Keelung to Yokohama: 1128 nautical miles
2294 nautical miles equal 2640 miles. Why do we need both? A mile is 5280 feet. A nautical mile is equal to one minute of arc around Planet Earth. One nautical mile equals 1.152 miles.
On 29 November 2019 we left Yokohama Osanbashi Passenger Terminal at 16:46. The sky was sunny and the temperature was 48F. One day, later, traveling south, the temperature was 59F. Internet use was spotty, with photos taking 10 minutes to download, compared to a second or two on land. Thus, I will show a few more of them, as we are back at the Yokohama Bay Sheraton.
Day 2 at-sea, the temperature was 73F. Day 3, we arrived in Naha, Okinawa in the early morning. Did you know that the USA has 32 military bases and 48 training sites in Okinawa and Japan? The Churaumi Aquarium was a highlight. I need to again show this photo of a lobster with a fish. Why? It looks like the lobster is eating the fish. Not so. They are in love. Or, at least close friends, for they were kissing each other and such.
The seas were so rough on Day 4 that the Captain chose to skip Ishigaki Island. You would think, as we are continuing south, the temperature should be warmer. However, sea temperatures today were down to 66F. Dinner was Prime Rib and Yorkshire Pudding, with a bottle of red from Italy. Then a late broadway show.
Day 5, we arrived in Keelung at 5:41AM. This was the day we went to various Taipei tourist sites, and I was not able to show too many photos. So here is a coral. I'm sure there is a fascinating story about why it was exhibited. I did not take any notes.
Day 6, we are back at sea. There was an explanation that seven ways are used to determine geographical direction, one being a gyrocompass, a non-magnetic device based on a fast-spinning disc in relation to the rotation of the Earth to establish direction. A bit rocky, and I'm sure a few got seasick. I was somewhat affected, but managed to have breakfast, and any symptom disappeared.
Dinner was Escargot, followed by Beef Wellington and some chocolate dome dessert, accompanied by a Prosecco and Silverado Cabernet Sauvignon:
Day 7, the seas got calmer. Temperature down to 55F. Mostly rested, although there was a light lunch of ayu (a freshwater fish) and onboard entertainment:

The final night of many cruises features the staff marching around with Baked Alaska. A bit blurry, but:
We watched karaoke and then went to sleep. The final morning we had a large breakfast and left the ship at 10AM:
Caught the cab to the Yokohama Bay Sheraton. Driver said it snowed early this morning. Says something about the morality of the people, but the taxi driver made a slight wrong turn, quickly made it up, but reduced the rate he charged us, perhaps too generously. Had a nap, and went up to the Club Lounge for our usual light dinner. Here is one set of foie gras, chili tuna and salmon something over rice, with a Chardonnay and scotch:
