MY LIFE THROUGH ELTON JOHN HITS

Biggest news of the day?  The House of Representatives voted to oust Keven McCarthy as Speaker of the House, 216-210.  Never happened before in our history.  So what's next?

  • At the beginning of his speakership, McCarthy filed into the record (kept secret) a list of names in priority order to the House Clerk to act in the case of his vacancy.
  • The person highest on the list shall act as Speaker pro tempore.
  • The first task will presumably be to vote on a permanent speaker.  But not necessarily.  There is no legal time frame for anything.
  • Could McCarthy run again?
    • Sure.
    • Probably won't win a normal vote, so could well work out a deal with Democrats.
    • But he has said enough, and won't run again.
  • Could Democrat Hakeem Jeffries run?
    • Sure.
    • But he won't get that position.
  • Could Matt Gaetz become the next speaker.
    •  Nope.
    • Why?  Republicans are not idiotic as Gaetz.

The second big newsworthy item is that no one won the Powerball jackpot last night.  Thus, you have until...well, depends on where you live, for the deadline will be 9:59PM EDT in New Jersey and 10PM in New York, etc., tomorrow, Wednesday night, to enter your bet.  A $2 investment can win you $1.2 billion, but you can add another buck to qualify for other options.  The odds remain one in 292.2 million against your hitting the jackpot.  There have been 33 consecutive drawings since the previous winner on July 19.  Powerball is played in 45 states, but not Hawaii.

Mega Millions will be drawn tonight at 11PM EDT, but is only at $315 million.

  • The odds of winning the jackpot here is 1 in 302.6 million.
  • Remember that your odds of getting struck by lighting once in your lifetime is only 1 in 15,300, and wonder why you bet anything at all.
  • Or, how about this?  If you bought a lottery ticket for every drawing over 80 years--twice per week for Mega Millions and thrice/week for Powerball--you are FAR LESS LIKELY TO Win than to be struck by lightning once.  Reminds me on being in a lighting storm on a van from Delhi to Agra.  I almost died.
  • One more:  imagine driving half a mile to buy your lottery ticket on a one mile roundtrip.  You 4 TIMES MORE LIKELY TO DIE in this car accident on your short trip than to win at these lotteries.
  • Mind you, there are all kinds of tiers, where you can win as little as $2 and $4.  But the odds of winning any prize at all is about 1 in 24.
  • However, buying a $2 lottery ticket has entertainment value.  I play fantasy sports for nothing to win nothing, and still do this annually.  And, by the way, I this year placed first in the league with a team, and twice in second place, for my three teams.  The time spent daily was enormous, but just placing so high without winning any money was worth the effort.

I last night watched Elton John Uncensored on Netflix.  Maybe a tad boring, but the program inspired me to choose this topic nostalgic Tuesday, for I did go to two of his concerts, and his hits seemed come at key points of my life.

But first a bit about him:

  • Sir Elton Hercules John (yes, he was knighted) was born in 1947 in a London suburb.
  • Won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music, where he studied for five years.
  • In 1967 formed a partnership with Bernie Taupin (lyrics).  Elton wrote the music.
  • Taupin called it a non-sexual love affair.  He has been married four times, all to females.  Now lives in Santa Barbara, California.
  • One of their compositions, Your Song, was first released by Three Dog Night in 1970, but only for an album.
  • Elton's released the single, and this became his first hit.  Billboard in 2022 ranked Your Song as number two of Elton's 75 greatest songs.
  • What was I doing in 1970?  I was well into my PhD research on Tunable Organic Dye Laser Irration of Escherichia coli.

In 1972 came Honky Cat.  I graduated from LSU with a PhD in biochemical engineering and got a job at the University of Hawaii.  51 years later, I still have an office on the Manoa Campus.  On that same album was also Rocket Man, the title of that film.  Tiny Dancer also was released in 1972.

Daniel was released in 1973, and on side two was Crocodile Rock.

  • John sang Goodbye Yellow Brick Road in his tour of that name for about the fifteen hundredth time in his 50 years of performing.  I actually went to that concert in Honolulu not that many years ago.  Also around 40 years ago at the Forum, the Breaking Hearts Tour in Los Angeles.
  • In 1974 sang Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, with John Lennon.  The Beatles had recorded this tune in 1967, which in 1974 was playing in celebration of the uncovering of an Australopithecus afarensis specimen, maybe the oldest known human ancestor, and so Donald Johanson and Maurice Taieb named the skeleton Lucy.
  • Philadelphia Freedom was released in 1975 as a favor to Elton's friend Billie Jean King, who led the professional tennis team of that name.
  • Pinball Wizard was also a hit that year.
  • Elton  was married to Renate Blaul in 1984.  No children.  I had recently returned from to the University of Hawaii from working the U.S. Senate, and helped form the Pacific International Center for High Technology Research.

  • Mid-1980s was the time for Sad Songs and That's What Friends Are For, with Dione Warwick, Gladys Knight and Stevie Wonder.  This latter song was a cover of a 1982 hit by Rod Stewart made for the film, Night Shift, and was organized to earn funds for AIDS research.  I became director of the Hawaii Natural Energy Institute.
  • I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues returned in 1990 with Mary Bilge.

Elton and his husband, David Furnish, have been together since the early 1990's.  They were legally married in 2014, and have two songs by the same surrogate.

In 1997 Diana, Princess of Wales, died in a Paris car crash.

  • Originally, Taupin was moved by Clive Davis' tribute to Janis Joplin using Candle in the Wind.
  • Known as a threnody, the song was a metaphor for fame and dying young.
  • On side two was Something About the Way You Look Tonight.
In 1994 Elton John wrote the music, with lyrics by Tim Rice, for Disney's animated The Lion King.  Can You Feel the Love Tonight was the biggest song, and won an Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1995.  I recall that year addressing UNESCO in Paris on the Blue Revolution.
  • In October of 1997, Candle in the Wind 97 became John's ninth U.S. #1, where it topped the Billboard Hot 100 for 14 weeks, and is the best-selling single in history, although there is debate whether Bing Crosby's White Christmas holds that title.
  • He performed the song only once, at Diana's funeral, and never again.  His tour version remains that of Marilyn Monroe.
  • I'm thinking back to my life in 1997, and my only thought is that I was beginning to take steps to retire from the University Hawaii, which I did in 1999.  That was almost a quarter century ago.
  • #1     Rocket Man
  • #2     Your Song
  • #3     Tiny Dancer

HOW TO SUCCEED IN LIFE

First, yes, the Donald Trump/family New York fraud court case began today with The Donald personally in attendance.   Trial will last into December and at worst will only cost him $250 million, which he'll contest.  No jail time for this infraction.

Got this in my e-mail this morning:

Good morning, Patrick! We are excited to share the historic news that California Gov. Gavin Newsom will appoint EMILYs List President Laphonza Butler to fill the seat of the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein.

As EMILYs List founder Ellen Malcom said, the governor has made an extraordinary choice. Laphonza was the first Black woman and the first mother to lead EMILYs List. She will become the only Black woman serving in the U.S. Senate and the first openly LGBTQ+ person to represent California in the chamber. And as a champion for labor rights and working people everywhere, we know that she will serve the people of California honorably.

The California 2024 Senate election now becomes complicated, for there is a March primary for this seat.  The way this state runs, the two finalists will be Democrats, with three currently announced to run:  Katie Porter, Adam Schiff and Barbara Lee.  And Butler can also join the race if she so wishes.  Plus, on 5November24, there will need to be another election to fill the remaining days of Feinstein's seat.  Of course, if one of them wins both, that individual will have a seniority lead over any new senator.

Want to immediately become a billionaire?  It's Powerball time again.  10:59 EDT tonight for $1.04 billion.  If you take all the money, you get slightly less than half a billion dollars.  The odds of you pulling this off are one in 292.1 million.  Two years ago, there was a $2.04 billion Powerball winner.

Well, Taylor Swift showed up again to watch Travis Kelce and his Kansas City Chiefs.  Also in the suite at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey were Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, Sophie Turner, Blake Lively and Antoni Porowski.  No doubt more Swifties were in the audience.

A few of us in the Photography Club at 15 Craigside had lunch yesterday with Scott, our instructor, who has been coming every month now for a decade.  He is the digital imaging specialist for the Honolulu Museum of Art.  All he gets out of volunteering is lunch.  We each month turn in a few photos, and they are shown for comments.  This photo to the left is one I took on a flight from Sydney to Tokyo.  For reasons I don't truly understand, everyone seemed to like it.  Enlarge it and you will see a reddish smudge in the mid-left side of the shot.  What was that?

At lunch I mentioned how just the fact we were now here at 15C meant that we have done well in life.  We all started with nothing much, and in different ways became triumphal.  What made us successful?  One resident later that day sent me a link to Chatri Sityondtong from Thailand, who today is mostly known to be the founder and chairman of ONE Championship, a mixed martial arts behemoth.  No question that he is wealthy and truly successful.  I watched the video and noted the following:

  • With no money and no support from his family, as his father had abandoned them, Chatri went to the USA and graduated from Tufts, then Harvard.
    • He said a good part of his success had to do with suffering, sacrifice and dealing with adversity.
    • From very little, I ended up at Stanford, but the school provided everything, so I never agonized.
  • He started his own financial company, then another, and became very rich.  But he gave that all up to return to the Orient, and started over, and became rich again.  After my PhD I joined the University of Hawaii, and more than half a century later, still have an office on campus.
You can go to Wikipedia and read about him.  There are other contrasts about our lives, but the one factor that stood out was that we attained our own success in totally different ways.  He suffered, while I did not.  I guess my concluding assessment is that there is no one way to gain success in life.  Another is, what is success?

For some, it is to become a billionaire.  And most will fail if that is your goal.  As I have not really done anything truly fabulous, maybe my goals were too easy to accomplish.  Well, maybe not, for my one goal left is to Save Planet Earth and Humanity, the theme of this blog site, not exactly an easy task.  And while I have failed at this, I remain, still, happy about my attempts.

Part of this feeling is that I have continued to harbor hope that one, if not all of the following crusades, will contribute to the advance of our society.
  • I worked on laser fusion at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
  • I spent some time at NASA's Ames Research Center on the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence.
  • I wrote the original U.S. Senate bill on hydrogen that became law.
  • I integrated the full range of my professional interests into the Blue Revolution.  You can  watch my TEDx talk on this subject I gave almost two years ago.

Typhoon Koinu formed this weekend, and is now up to 125 MPH. Taiwan and Hong Kong are threatened.

A RATHER EXCITING COMING WEEK

At one time the posting today was named, What is Death?  Then I decided to use these contents next week.  But that title still applies, for our government was supposed to be shut down, or die, this weekend.  However, Speaker Kevin McCarthy took the bipartisan pathway and all is well for the Federal government, at least until another death threat deadline comes in mid-November.  McCarthy will, of course, undergo another kind of death, lost of his speakership, to be advanced by recalcitrant Republicans this week.  Matt Gaetz will be at the head of that line.  Will they succeed?  Maybe Democrats will save McCarthy.  Such is the nature of politics in the House of Representatives today.

So on to what else will be happening in the USA this coming week:

  • The New York lawsuit accusing the Trump Organization of inflating property values will come to trial tomorrow.
    • All reports indicate that The Donald himself will show up in person for at least the first week of this civil fraud trial, and will face now nemesis, Judge Arthur Engoron, who was elected judge of the Supreme Court 1st Judicial District in New York.  This is a lifetime position.
    • So in answer to that question on the right, it was the people of New York who voted for him, so no politics at work here.  Engoron is a man for all seasons, as he has worked as taxi driver, band member and protestor during the Vietnam War, then earned degrees from Columbia University and the New York University School of Law.  He is 74 and that is his 1967 high school year book photo.
    • Trump has called Arthur a political hack and deranged.  Lots of luck, Donald.
    • This will be a non-jury trial with potential damages amounting to $250 million.
  • After all that hoo ha, Hunter Biden will on Wednesday plead not guilty to gun charges.  Trial could linger for a while.  House still on a path to impeach Joe Biden for his linkage with son in business dealings.
  • Former president Jimmy Carter turned 99 today.
    • They have their own problems with ethics.
    • 58% disapprove of Supreme Court's job performance.  Trust was up to 80% in 2000.  Now, 49%.
    • 73% of Democrats feel the Supreme Court is too conservative, but only 8% of Republicans do likewise.  Interesting that only 41% of Independents think that SCOTUS is too conservative.
  • Major League Baseball playoffs begin on Tuesday.
    • There are 30 MLB teams, and 12 qualified.
    • Who plays who gets complicated.   One reason is that, to be decided today, either the Astros or Rangers will join the Braves, Orioles and Dodgers to enjoy first-round byes.  Here is the schedule.
    • What's at stake today, final regular season day:

  • The Rangers clinch the AL West and a first-round bye with a win or an Astros loss.
  • The Astros clinch the AL West and a first-round bye with a win and a Rangers loss.
  • The Blue Jays clinch the AL's No. 5 seed with an Astros loss or with a win and a Rangers win.
  • The Marlins clinch the NL's No. 5 seed with a win or Diamondbacks loss.
    • If the World Series 7th game is played, the date will be November 4.
    • From Fanduel, chances to win the World Series:
      • Atlanta Braves  28%
      • Los Angeles Dodgers  20%
      • Houston Astros  15%
      • Baltimore Orioles  13%
      • Texas Rangers
      • Philadelphia Phillies
      • Minnesota Twins
      • Toronto Blue Jays
      • Milwaukee Brewers
      • Arizona Diamondbacks  2%
      • Miami Marlins  2%
    • One of my three fantasy baseball teams won its league.  The other two came in second.  What did I win?  Nothing.  Like the Ryder and Solheim Golf Cups, we do it for pride.
  • Nobel Prize announcements will be named from October 2-9.
    • October 2  Physiology/Medicine
    • October 2  Physics
    • October 4  Chemistry
    • October 5  Literature
    • October 6  Peace
    • October 9  Economics Sciences
    • The odds of me winning something are zero.

Finally, Elvis is in the building.  King Size made its debut last Friday as part of U2's opening concert performance at the Sphere, a brand new Las Vegas $2.3 billion entertainment venue.  The largest spherical structure in the world, with the highest-resolution wraparound LED screen.  Here to the left is the photo I took a couple months ago when I was in Vegas.  Below, one night view of the Sphere.

What is King Size?

  • First, the Sphere is 360 feet tall and 516 feet wide, with 167,000 speakers.
  • 18,000 spectators for that U2 concert (watch three videos--go full screen and increase your volume...the third one is most impressive), greeted by 5 AI humanoid robots.
  • Even though you missed the opening, U2 will have 24 concerts in here through December.
  • Marco Bambilla (to the right) created a collage via AI technology paying tribute to Elvis.

Confused?  Watch this.  Still not sure about what King Size really is?  Click on THIS.  Bambilla is known for pioneering digital imaging technologies and AI to create immersive video installations.
