Day 36 of the Lower Puna Eruption has authorities uncertain about how many homes have been destroyed: somewhere around 500. Lava coverage is now at 5500 acres, more than the 1955 Kapoho event. Still, no volcano caused deaths.
Day 5 of the Volcan de Fuego Eruption is faced with similar incertitude: at least 100 deaths, with another 200 missing. Why so many? The Guatemala activity was explosive with something called pyroclastic flow, a combination of ash, rock and gases that move as fast as an automobile. The Kilauea lava creeps along.

Nearly a century ago, 1921 to be exact, Miss America participants walked on the Atlantic City boardwalk in bathing suits. Sure, they were the conservative one-piece version, which was denigrated then for promoting loose morals. But in 1946 the bikini was invented, so the Miss American Pageant issued similar two-piece outfits to their contestants. Roman Catholic protesters succeeded in ending that embarrassment the following year, so more modest bulletproof vests were subsequently provided for another half a century.
It took until 1997 when the competitors were given the option to wear whatever swimsuit they wanted, but the bottom portion could be no lower than one inch below the belly button. Two, it is reported, wore bikinis, and Miss Hawaii Erika Kauffmann had the briefest bikini, winning that phase of the contest. I couldn't verify a photo with Erika in a bikini, but the shot to the right is supposedly from the 1997 Miss American competition, but there were three, and the one to the right must have been Erika.
Miss America contestants will no longer compete in swimsuit and evening-gown competitions, chairwoman Gretchen Carlson (that's her in 1989) announced Tuesday. On Good Morning America, Carlson, the 1989 Miss America and former Fox News host, said the pageant won’t judge competitors on their physical appearance at all.
I actually watched Miss America last year and was astonished that something had changed from what I remembered as this beauty pageant. Almost all the girls in 2017 were not at all that attractive. So, you might say, Miss America had already evolved into a competition where they were not judged on physical appearance. Miss Arkansas Savvy Shields was crowned last year as Miss America 2018.
The 2019 non-bikini program can be seen from 9-11PM EDT on ABC, 9 September 2018. In this year of #MeToo and Harvey Weinstein, will this now "progressive" Miss America adaptation draw sufficient viewers?
