I started my Ward Complex movie Sunday with lunch at Rinka.
The film was mostly filmed in London, Glasgow and Samoa, a root of The Rock (here with father and mother). Then again, not really, for Samoa was filmed on Kauai. Johnson's mother is from Samoa, and he graduated from my alma mater, McKinley High School in Honolulu, where he went on to play football for the University of Miami, which in 1991 won the national championship.
Coming soon are Tigers are Not Afraid (97% RT), orphans in the backdrop of a Mexican drug war, and Transit (95% RT), a German film during the Second World War of a refugee escaping to Marseille who uses a passport of someone who committed suicide, only to fall in love with his wife.
Unagi, udon (most Oriental noodles are made from wheat, with chow fun and pho noodles from rice) and assorted dishes, with hot shochu (no one heats straight sochu, but I did, and wow, don't) and cold beer. Excellent, but was this worth $36, with tax and tip? Plus the $17 for the meal I missed at 15 Craigside. I can't remember what this area looked like when I was growing up, as my home for the first 15 years of my life was located only a couple of blocks away.

Hobbs and Shaw was #1 this weekend and is the first spinoff of the Fast and Furious series, which initially in 2001 starred Vin Diesel and Paul Walker, who passed away during the 7th in the series of 8, with H&S as #9. If you got that, you should also know that there will be a second tangentional, this time featuring females, ending with two final F&F films.
Duane Johnson (Luke Hobbs) and Jason Stratham (Deckard Shaw) only entered the scene from F&F 6. The nine films were made on a $1.2 billion budget and have earned $5.3 billion, 70% from foreign markets. The U.S. has only 5% the world population. With this kind of profit, you know there will be further spinoffs and more.
Physically-enhanced and genetic virus terrorist Idris Elba is the primary villain, while Vanessa Kirby plays an equally capable sister of Shaw, with Helen Mirren their mother. Will there be a sequel? Absolutely, for what is Eteon (Keanu Reeves???), and various links were shown in the post-credits. Ryan Reynolds and Kevin Hart appear in cameos, more than once. Professional wrestler Roman Reigns is Johnson's brother, and real life cousin.
Dora and the Lost City of Gold, #4 this weekend, is one of those films I knew nothing about, except that it looked good on Rotten Tomatoes. I came in to the theater when the previews had started, and got concerned when four of five were animated, and the fifth an obviously family film. Yes, this production is one for kids and teenagers, but surprisingly entertaining. Kind of reminds you of Jumanji played by high schoolers.
Dora comes from a series on Nickelodean, starring Isabela Moner. You might recognize a chubbier Eva Longoria as her mother and Michael Pena as dad, both as academic explorers. Filming occurred in Australia. Yes, they do find the gold city.
I might add that portions of the film were animated, and the computer reproductions, with Benicio del Toro as the voice of Swiper the Fox, and Danny Trejo as Boots the Monkey, stole the show. You've already seen this film in various incarnations, but a good escape flick nevertheless.

This is the obon period when travelers return home to honor their departed, so there could be at least minor chaos for those on the move in Japan. Landing at Narita or Haneda does not at this time look to be a problem.
