The Onishi Ohana had a reunion today. Somewhere around 50 showed up. It was nice to see Pearl's relatives and better understand their roots, as each family wore different colored shirts or leis. Thank you Nancy and Wendy for organizing the gathering.
I then went to Rainbow Falls, where a year ago I had a private ash scattering ceremony, which was the first tossing. Along the way, I noticed that there was a beautiful yellow tree close by Pearl's Hilo High School. I'm not sure if this is the exactly correct tree, for it was so huge and old. Perhaps this was where Pearl first noticed the color.
Tomorrow, some family and friends will gather on the slopes of Mauna Kea to participate in a remembrance ceremony. Anyone reading this and interesting in joining us should show up by 8:30AM (Monday, July 19) at Pearl's mother's home at 1874 Kilauea Avenue. Later that day I will visit the nursery near Kona which grows and sells

Pearl's yellow tree.
I should mention that the oppressive air pollution from the Kilauea eruption is hardly noticeable in Hilo. In fact, the Hawaii Tribune-Herald reported today of reduced sulfur dioxide levels.
Finally, my view from the Naniloa...pounding waves...an idyllic end to the day.

A new disturbance just popped up west of the Philippines and seems headed in the general direction of Hong Kong.

Mom and I were just sitting here the other day remembering Pearl and noting it was close to the anniversary of her passing. We both have such fond memories of Pearl. Gracious, kind, bright, funny. We do miss her special calming grace which she shared with others so effortlessly. A true treasure. Mom and I think of her often during the year. Thinking of Pearl always brings a smile to both of us.
Thinking of you with love,
Susan and Emi
Thank you, Susan for your kind comments. You must now go to my blog of Sunday, July19, to continue the adventure. Best to Emi and Doug.
