MAUNA KEA

I woke up this morning and saw what Pearl might have seen every day when she grew up.

This is why we chose to settle her ashes on Mauna Kea, where we today repeated the ceremony of last year.

A year ago when I returned home from Kuakini Hospital after her passing away, I wrote and submitted "Gratitude, Not Grief" to the Huffington Post.  As this posting was too, too clinical, I must also share with you some of our happier moments in Pearl Yukie Takahashi.

Following the Mauna Kea ceremony, I drove to Jill Wagner's Future Forests Nursery, where I purchased two Cybistax donnell-smithii, Pearl's yellow tree.  Unfortunately, I drove away without paying for them, so will need mail in my check.  Depending on how many are purchased, the price ranges from $5-$7/sapling.  Under ideal growth conditions, they can flower in a couple of years.  This happens in the Spring, so that yellow tree I saw yesterday across from Hilo High School must not be the right variety.

My current plans are to give SIMPLE SOLUTION Essays, my third book, which is dedicated to Pearl and will be published in September, and a Cybistax donnell-smithii sapling, to everyone who contributed, and anyone else who wants one or both.  According to Jill, this tree grows well in Hilo and Honolulu.  There is still a possibility that the City and County of Honolulu might plant a bank of these trees on the Mauka side of the Ala Wai Canal.  Councilman Nestor Garcia is looking into this matter with Big Island Councilman Dennis Onishi serving as cheerleader.  Dennis is Pearl's cousin.

The day ended at Pahuia at the Four Seasons Hualalai.  Donald Okahara and I are golfing tomorrow at this golf course, and we need to wake up at 6AM to eat the Japanese breakfast before golfing 27 holes.  Never had a Japanese breakfast at the Four Seasons Hualalai?  Then you need to read my blog of last year on this extravagance.

The sunset was particularly exquisite from our table.  A great end to a solemn and enriching day.

Hi Pat:

Thank you for sharing Pearl's anniversary with us! You know, there have been so many times throughout the past year that I've remembered little things about Pearl and I'm so grateful for her inspiration. She was a special, caring and thoughtful person who truly made a difference for so many people.

Wishing you the best!!
Nancy
