The USA (pink color) appears to be following the COVID-19 track of Italy and Iran:
What did those governments in the Orient do to better control the coronavirus? While Taiwan is not shown on that above graph, it's only because they did even better. The country is an island 81 miles from China, with 1.25 million Taiwanese citizens living there. The people traffic from China was 3 million last year.
The Lunar New Year is a time for citizens returning home, and many Taiwanese lived in Wuhan. This was supposed to be a best-case scenario for a COVID-19 catastrophe.
- Against all odds, Taiwan has only had 45 cases with one death (victim already had Hepatitis B and diabetes). No new cases in the past 24 hours.
- It seems that they were able to react more effectively because of their experience with the 2003 SARS epidemic:
- Taiwan built up its public health infrastructure to launch immediate response to the next crisis.
- Secondly, leadership.
- Their vice president, Chen Chien-jen, is an epidemiologist who received his doctorate from The Johns Hopkins University.
- As early as December 31 (this is before the first known case of confirmed coronavirus), they sent health workers to assess passengers flying in from Wuhan for fever or pneumonia.
- By a week later they expanded surveillance to include anyone who had traveled to Wuhan during the previous two weeks, utilizing big data and analytics.
- The government created a list of 124 "action items" related to border issues, quarantining, and health system capability to treat potential victims.
- An educational campaign was launched to calm the public and combat misinformation.
- Schools were allowed to proceed for in that country students don't disperse, but teachers rotate into classrooms. A system was established whereby if one student got sick of COVID-19, the class was canceled. Two students and the school closed. Three students and all schools shut down.
- Visitors from China who got into the country was linked to their national health program to check for any respiratory illness.
- A toll-free number was established for anyone to report suspicious symptoms.
- They fine people for skirting the reality: a man was fined $10,000 for failure to report his symptoms and contributed to another contamination.
Our greatest democracy with a bungling leader is no match for more dictatorial countries in certain kinds of crisis. So how am I conforming to these abnormal times? I've socially distanced myself. I'm probably a natural hermit anyway, so no big deal. The Blue Revolution meeting scheduled in my room last week was moved to March 31.
- The University of Hawaii will begin online teaching, and the next time I go to campus will be for that meeting.
- I postponed my teeth cleaning appointment and eye check into May.
- My knee therapy exercises in the morning have expanded, for I have more time. Better for my knee in the long run.
- I sleep more. Better for my health.
- I will probably gain a few pounds, for I tend to eat better, but maybe I should also begin to consider healthier food and fewer alcoholic drinks:
- A Chinese study suggests that drinking green tea only three times a week reduces the risk of heart disease (-25%), stroke (-25%) and death (live 15% longer). More than 100,000 people were involved.
- However, don't drink piping-hot coffee or tea, for at 140 F or higher, your chances of esophageal cancer doubles.
- Note, black tea does not work, for the fermentation destroys polyphenols and macronutrients.
- What about alcohol? The latest study showed that older adults (over 65) are more and more into "high-risk drinking." But this means five or more drinks/day (4/day for females). I know no one at 15 Craigside in this category, including me. From current medical science: Enjoy in moderation. Guidelines from the NIAAA advise that adults over the age of 65 who are healthy and do not take medications limit their alcohol consumption to no more than 3 drinks on any given day and no more than seven drinks in a week. I no doubt exceed that weekly limit, but at my age, I deserve it.
- According to a study published on 1October2019 in the Annals of Internal Medicine, It's Okay to Eat Red Meat. But only two to three servings/week. Heck, I only consume Japanese Wagyu Beef once a week. Further:
All the fat in Wagyu beef means it’s actually better for you. How is that possible? Wagyu is high in a compound called oleic acid, which gives it a higher proportion of monounsaturated fatty acids—otherwise known as the good kind of fat, which does not increase your cholesterol.
- American nutritionist still say that fish is better for you than red meat.
The unsaturated fats in fish, such as salmon, actually have health benefits. Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish and some plant sources, as part of a heart-healthy diet, can help reduce the risk of heart failure, coronary heart disease, cardiac arrest and the most common type of stroke (ischemic).
- I eat a lot of salmon and even more of fatty tuna:
- Tuna comprises omega-3 fatty acids, which help in bringing balance in the blood vessels thereby reducing cholesterol in the arteries. As such, the heart is able to efficiently carry out its function of pumping blood throughout the body, maintaining good health.
- Tuna is rich in potassium, which is known for lowering blood pressure. Omega-3 fatty acids in combination with potassium bring an anti-inflammatory effect to the cardiovascular system, which in turn benefits us by lowering blood pressure, risk of stroke and heart attacks.
- Tuna is rich in manganese, zinc, vitamin C and selenium, which help in strengthening the immune system. These antioxidants protect us from diseases like cancer by fighting the free radicals - the by-products of metabolism on the cellular level.
- Weight is a major issue faced by majority of people these days. We all like eating tasty food but also maintain a slim figure. Tuna provides us good taste while balancing our calories since it’s low in fat content and rich in proteins and nutrients.
- Tuna contains Vitamin B which is a major component in strengthening bones. This vitamin makes the bones stronger and protects them from injuries like fracture. Add this in your daily diet and watch out for effective results.
- The Vitamin B complex in the fish helps in keeping our skin healthy. It contains a protein called elastin which gives a smooth tone to our skin. If you wish to improve your skin's health, then bring tuna to your rescue. It will help you get a radiant skin.
- Antioxidants from the tuna meat fight cancer cells. Studies have shown that regular consumption of tuna helps in eliminating the risk of breast and kidney cancer.
- Tuna not only improves your metabolism rate but also increases the functionality of your organs which keeps your body energetic, active and healthy. Apart from this, it may also help in boosting your immune system.
- In particular, the belly of the tuna is the healthiest part. Thus, chu-toro (fatty) and o-toro (fattiest). Omega-3 fatty acids, most prominent in the belly, play important roles in our body. Epidemiological and randomized clinical trials have shown that omega-3 fatty acids can reduce:
- The incidence of arrhythmias
- The incidence of heart failure
- Reduce the rate of myocardial infarction (also known as heart attack)
- Lower triglycerides
- Lower LDL cholesterol
- Decrease Blood Pressure
- Risk of sudden cardiac death (SCD)
- Has anti-inflammatory effects
One problem is that o-toro can cost $60/pound. And what about the mercury? Tunas are on the warning list for high mercury content. However, if you're not pregnant or an infant, tuna in moderation should be okay. If concerned, click on this site for symptoms...which will scare you because the effects include everything that happens to you when anything goes bad, especially if you're approaching dementia. At my age, I eat tuna two or three times per week. Sure, I'm forgetful, but I've always been so.
The Fed Reserve essentially dropped the benchmark rate to zero last night, but YIKES, the Dow Jones still sunk 2997 points to 20,1889. This is the worst drop ever in history! Into the last hour President Donald Trump said this outbreak could last into August. This helped the final decline.
