CFR is the death rate, which for the seasonal flu is 0.1%. Let those 50 and under continue--which would drive the death rate closer to that of the seasonal flu, and we don't shut down society every flu season--to support the economy. This would be like a mandatory retirement age at 51. Mind you, in this humanitarian society today, this will not happen, but something for discussion...and rejection.
Hey, this is Saturday, enough of the coronavirus for now. Let us think back and mourn the death of Lynn Evans Mand, who passed away earlier this month. She was the voice of Mr. Sandman and Lollypop. There have been eight Chordettes members, now down to two.
Originally from Sheboygan, Wisconsin, in 1949 they won on Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts and went on to record for Columbia Records. Archie Bleyer was Godfrey's music director and orchestra leader. He founded Cadence Records in 1953 and signed the Chordettes, in 1954 producing Mr. Sandman, their greatest hit.
I was 14 and going to Central Intermediate School. This is an age when you especially remember certain songs. You never hear music of this era anymore, on radio or even any of the 50 Music Channels on cable.
But back to the good ole days, Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts premiered in 1948, and was the highest rated television show in 1951-52. Boy did he find some talent: Pat Boone, McGuire Sisters, Tony Bennett, Roy Clark, Rosemary Clooney, Vice Damone, The Diamonds, Eddie Fisher, Connie Francis, Don Knotts, Steve Lawrence, Al Martino, Jonathan Winters and Patsy Cline. Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly and The Four Freshman auditioned, but did NOT make the cut.
Bleyer's first signed artist was Julius La Rosa, also a Godfrey graduate. La Rosa's Eh, Cumpari! reached #2 on Billboard. There was a big feud between La Rosa and Godfrey that year and La Rosa was fired. In the process, Bleyer was also let go. Attitude was one reason, but another was he was dating Janet Ertel of the Chordettes, against company policy. They got married. Bleyer never commented on what happened.
What you remember most about Archie Bleyer are his Hernando's Hideaway and The Naughty Lady of Shady Lane in 1954. The first song came from The Pajama Game and reached #2 on Billboard. The second hit only got to #26. The Ames Brothers came out first and reached #3. This Ole House by Rosemary Clooney and I Need You Now by Eddie Fisher were in the way. Note that they both came from Talent Scouts. That was in November of 1954. In December, the Chordettes' Mr. Sandman took over, being #1 in the nation all month.
Cadence also signed Andy Williams, The Everly Brothers and Chet Atkins. One star later was Vaughn Meador, who did comedic sketches of the then Kennedy clan (this is the complete album). Tragically, John Kennedy was assassinated in 1963, and Meador's career essentially ended. Bleyer couldn't keep up with the changing pop times and sold Cadence to Andy Williams. Archie and Janet retired to Sheboygan and he died of Parkinson's in 1989.
But back to the Chordettes, also key was Jiny Osborn, born in 1928, daughter of the president of The Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing In America, now known as the Barbershop Harmony Society. The Chordettes was a close-harmony group.
In addition to Mr. Sandman and Lollipop, Born to Be with You (#5) in 1956 was their third biggest hit. They broke up in 1961, just about half a century ago.
They covered To Know Him is to Love Him by the Teddy Bears, which compels me to take another segue. Not only was this song written by Phil Spector, but the Teddy Bears was the only group of which he--guess which one--was a member. The song hit #1 for three weeks in 1958.
Phil was a senior in high school, and the lead singer was a sophomore, Annette Kleinbard, who became Carol Connors, and went on to co-write Gonna Fly Now, the theme song for the film Rocky. She testified at the trial of O.J. Simpson. Nothing much. Spector went on to become a millionaire at 23, famous for producing a range of "Wall of Sound" songs, but became mentally ill, was convicted of murder in 2009 and has been in jail since then. I reported on him seven years ago.
The Chordettes also released Eddie My Love (1956, originally by the Teen Queens and covered by the Fontane Sisters), Never on Sunday (1960, sung by Melina Mercouri, with the song winning an Oscar), Hummingbird (1955, Les Paul and Mary Ford), Charlie Brown (1959, Coasters), Lonely Boy (1959, Paul Anka) and Pink Shoelaces (1959, Dodie Stevens). They were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2001.

Summary:
- The U.S. and Spain are the only two entities above showing an increase in deaths over the past 24 hour.
- China, Italy, Germany, South Korea and the World had declines. Can't determine much from a one-day decline, but the number of new deaths in the World dropped from 2782 to 2609.
- There remains considerable worry about Africa and India.
Analysis:
- Russia, which is the largest country in area, has only 4 deaths, but as new cases jumped by 228 from Friday, it will close its borders from March 30.
- India, the second most populated country, has only 20 deaths, and apparently had no new deaths, but remains in lockdown.
- The reason why I'm focusing on new deaths as the key statistic is because, as testing becomes more available, there will be an accelerated rate of cases reported, even those who are asymptomatic (show no or little symptoms). Thus, mushrooming cases do not truly reflect what is happening. This figure will disproportionately increase during the current transition. But a death has no relation to the unavailability of test kits. It does, though, reflect a shortage of personal protection equipment. The lack of ventilators has not yet been a factor, but could well become a major issue if patients exponentially increase in hot spots. As all hospital requirements, including space, get met, the percentage of deaths should decrease relative to the true number of cases.
- How much does it cost to get tested for COVID-19?
- The kit itself, about $50/test.
- However, adding all staffing and analysis costs, some insurance companies charge more than $3000/patient! The $2.2 trillion legislation makes this free.
- Why does it take up to a week to get your test result when the media reports that there is now a 15-minute analysis kit? This 15-minute rapid test by Coris BioConcept just improves the current standard that takes "only" four to six hours to run in a certified laboratory. This is not like testing for pregnancy, where it takes only a few minutes at home by checking for a particular color. For this coronavirus, it depends on how fast the sample can get to a laboratory, plus how quickly they can get the result to you. All the above IF you have sufficient swabs, reagents, trained technicians, personal protection equipment, laboratories with the right equipment, etc. More and more these bottlenecks are only beginning to be overcome.
- There is a new home test kit becoming available, called an antigen test. Prick your finger for a drop of blood and within minutes you can get a reading about being immune to COVID-19. Amazon could soon have this available. However, this will be negative for almost all...unless you had this infection and got over it. Getting a positive could actually mean that you will soon begin to show symptoms. Do you really want to do this? Antigen tests are also available for HIV, malaria and flu.
- Mandatory testing of everyone on Planet Earth for what is necessary might never be accomplished.
- It is clear what is necessary. What Governor Cuomo is doing for New York State is what President Trump and his staff should do for the nation. Establish priorities for the country driven by need. New York needs a lot of help today, while assistance to most others can be delayed. This should drop the cost of personal protective equipment and ventilators. New hot spots are developing, and they should get high priority consideration. The central government will also pull resources from those states that show the peak has been reached.
- The term social distancing is more and more being replaced by physical distancing because mental health advice more and more promotes social interaction through electronics and other creative means. A whole new set of companies now offer private networking options. At 15 Craigside exercise classes now are limited to ten, who are 6 feet apart, if not more. Poker is still okay, but maybe because the chips block us from coughs. The more you win, the safer you are.
- The local newspaper this morning had three op-eds that are worthy of your perusal:
- David Brooks: This economic/social recession has brought forth creativity that will help in the long run make this a better world. A spark of bi-partisanship, Zoom conferences , strengthening of families and a lot more.
- Megan McArdle: Generation Z (those under 30) will learn from this pain to better refocus your life. Like, for example, quitting the cruise and movie theater line of work, and going on to something more meaningful.
- Jacob Sullum: Of course, he is with Reason, which is a libertarian magazine, but he articulates on Donald Trumps concern about the cost of COVID-19 control. Are the policy cures worse than the disease? The Great Recession of 2008-2009 cost the nation $22 trillion. Will this current overreaction to protect the people cost more than a more targeted approach? He did not say the below, but in effect, this could well be a possible libertarian viewpoint:
- So the old mostly die, they did not have that much longer to live anyway and are not doing much for society today, except draw from federal funds.
- The younger generation needs to be tested first, but should be allowed to work and enjoy life in certain targeted communities not near the epicenters.
- Schools should be allowed to teach as normal, for the death rate from COVID-19 is no different from the seasonal flu for this younger group.
- Protect the elderly to the maximum.
