COVID-19: My Search for Face Shields

The coronavirus COVID-19 is affecting 198 countries and territories around the world and 1 international conveyance (the Diamond Princess cruise ship harbored in Yokohama, Japan). The day is reset after midnight GMT+0.

  WORLD                 510.646     +39,678       23,079       +1801

On the change of deaths over the past 24 hours:

Summary of above tables...generally good news:
    • China and South Korea are heading towards zero deaths/day.
    • Italy and Spain appear to be peaking in deaths/day.
    • U.S. showed a one-day decline in deaths/day, and lowest figure of past five days
    • World actually had a one-day decline in deaths/day.
With respect to this COVID-19 Pandemic, clearly:
  • There was no way to prepare with sufficient test kits, personal protective wear and ventilators.
  • Those countries--probably because of past experience-- which were able to quarantine quickly, with a responsible populace, minimized deaths.
    • In the Orient, for example, people are accustomed to wearing face masks.  Just about anyone who walks out of his home with even a mild cold wears a mask.  However, not necessarily because of any physical ailment, but also air pollution, even Singapore, which regularly gets overwhelmed by man-made forest fires from Indonesia.    Not so in the rest of the world, and certainly not in the U.S.  This will be one of lessons learned.
    • In China, it was fortunate that air pollution is especially terrible in January and February in most parts of the country.  Thus, as a matter of health, everyone just wears a face mask when they leave home.  Perhaps Wuhan does not have a severe air pollution problem in January.  Wuhan's citizens last year protested construction of a garbage incineration facility, but, according to this publication, it is NOT among the most polluted Chinese cities.
    • Dictatorial governments (like China), benevolent dictatorships (Singapore) and a generally responsible citizenry (Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, South Korea, Scandinavia), coped better.
    • Liberal democracies with proud free-will tended to too slowly respond.
    • Note the following death rate per million population:
      • Taiwan  0.08
      • Singapore  0.3
      • Japan  0.4
      • Australia  0.5
      • Israel  0.9
      • Canada  1
      • China  2
      • Iceland  2
      • USA  3
      • Germany  3
      • South Korea  3
      • Norway  3
    • The worst ones:
      • San Marino  619
      • Italy  136
      • Spain  89
      • Iran  27
      • Netherlands  25
      • Switzerland  22
      • Belgium  19
    • On the other hand:
      • Nigeria, with a population of 191 million, has had no deaths
      • Vietnam, 96 million, no deaths
      • South Africa, 57 million, no deaths
      • New Zealand, 5 million, no deaths
      • India  0.01
      • Russia  0.02
      • Bangladesh  0.03
      • Pakistan  0.04
      • Mexico  0.05
      • Saudi Arabia  0.09
      • Cuba  0.09
      • Much of South America around 0.3
      • Indonesia  0.3
      • Africa, very low
If you look at those curves shown on news channels, they all use a graph that keeps increasing.  So everyone gets frightened.  When it comes to total deaths or total cases, the curve always (with Hawaii being the only outlier) keeps going up.  My focusing on deaths per past 24 hours is based on derivatives, showing peaks and slopes.  Not the stock market kind, but the mathematics of differential equations.  Many of you get lost in any math.  Click on this for a reasonably simple explanation.

How long should countries like the USA maintain serious lockdown?  Best if enough test kits can test everyone, so only the infected can be quarantined, allowing the well to work.  Short of that, it would be wise to continue practicing extreme social distancing.  The problem with this coronavirus (which was not true of the ones that caused SARS and MERS) is that there are carriers who do not show any symptoms or feel that they only have a mild cold.

It looks like New Orleans will be the next hot spot.  Since the first positive case on March 19, there has been a 65.7% daily growth.  Now up to 1795 cases.  Friends from LSU sent me this recommendation.  You best appreciate this sign if you've experienced NCAA football season in Louisiana.

In my continued attempt to avoid COVID-19, this is embarrassing, but I actually cogitated a bit on where in Honolulu I could find a face shield?  Welding store?  Then, the obvious, what about Amazon?  But aha, Google had done something.  As much as I tried to get to Amazon, Google sent me to their buying page.  I had to trick them to get to Amazon by inserting Amazon.com above where you type in your link.

The Jackson Safety 138-18629 Full Faceshield seemed promising for $23.36.  A breathable faceshield.  But it wasn't available.

The first one below had ten shields, all for $13.40.  It actually was in stock...but the delivery period was May 1-27.  Deleted that.

The middle one looked promising.  However, turns out, for whatever reason, they don't deliver to Hawaii.  I've seen this many times before.  Like during my toilet paper search.

Just in case I truly someday needed something, I went for the $14.49  face shield.  But there was a $4.99 delivery charge.  What if I brought the sum to $25 and more, there should be no handling fee.  What about a bottle of 90 ZanthoSyn?  Not available.  I couldn't think of what else I truly needed.  One hour into this ordeal, I just ordered the face shield.  However the delivery period was April 10-27.

Led me end with, finally, a significant development towards an effective solution to solve this pandemic in America.  I can already predict Dr. Anthony Fauci as Time's next Man of the Year:
