This weekend I saw two films mostly panned by reviewers. However audiences thought better. From Rotten Tomatoes:

While Meg had by far the most revenues this weekend, I went because there was a blurb in the morning paper from The New York Times about an ancient teeth belonging to a "bloody big shark," twice the size of the great white. Three years ago a teacher found a 3-inch tooth on a beach in Victoria, Australia. Further study showed that it came from a prehistoric shark from 25 million years in the past called Carcharocles angustidens.
It was twenty years ago that I read a novel by Steve Alten:
In the prologue, a Tyrannosurus Rex is devoured by a Megalodon. This super shark grew up to 80+ feet, not the mere 30 feet of the extinct fish above. There was series of eight books.
Finally, two decades later, The Meg became a U.S.-China co-production, with Jason Stratham. The reality is that Meg appeared 35 million years after the dinosaurs died off, but theoretically if the situation had occurred, could have chomped on a reckless T. Rex feeding at the shoreline, which grew to a length of 40 feet, half being the tail.
So to summarize the size of these behemoths:
- Great White Shark--20 feet
- Carcharocles Angustidens--30 feet
- Megalodon--59-82 feet
The film was noisy, stressful and a bit disappointing. Will there be a sequel? Having wiped out the weekend competition and earning $141 million worldwide, almost surely, especially as there are those other books written by Alten (right) on this subject.
I went to see The Spy Who Dumped Me only because this one was released earlier, and qualified for my free Consolidated Theater pass, which was to expire next month. I'm almost embarrassed to say this, but it's possible this was my favorite film of the year. A bit far-fetched, for two aimless best friends, Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon, evolve into master liquidators at the end. You'd think the scriptwriters could have given each some hint of early physical prowess to provide some credibility to their later development. Yes, I have just given everything away, but go see the film anyway. 
The romp throughout Europe was well-written, with twisty sub-plots and remarkable creativity, melding a typical Tom Cruise action film into If It's Tuesday, This Must be Belgium, a romantic travelogue released in 1969. Can't believe that was just about half a century ago! Oh, if you click on that link, you can watch that entire 1 hr 39 min movie. Spy was more adventure than comedy, with spiffy and really nice touches. However, it is R-rated, with gratuitous nudity and graphic killings.
And, yes, there will be a sequel. Director Susanna Fogel hints so, anyway. It has made over $50 million worldwide, exceeding the production budget.
