I recently returned from a tasting trip to France, but this Martel is not Martell, the cognac. I missed the Academy Awards, and learned that Rami Malek won the Oscar for Best Actor. He played Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody. As I reported in my review of the movie, Malek did not do all of the singing. Freddie Mercury himself was prominent, but the singing star was probably someone you never heard of: Marc Martel.
Martel is a 42-year old Canadian who with Downhere released ten albums. He began a solo career in 2012 and joined the Brian May (right) / Roger Taylor (originals) official Queen tribute project. His Somebody to Love has generated 16 million views on You Tube. That version was first performed on American Idol in 2012.
I should add that American Idol 2019 began last night. This is season 17, and brings back the same crew: Ryan Seacrest as host, with Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie. Auditions will continue for four more weeks, with Hollywood Week beginning on March 24.
Incidentally, there is a web hoax that Luke Bryan just passed away. Not true. However, Luke Perry, only 52, did just die of a stroke.
There was a heart-rending moment last night when one of the contestants, Nick Townsend, indicated that two of his brothers had committed suicide, and Bryan tearfully responded that he had lost a brother and sister.

But back to Marc Martel, he was once part of a Christian band and won't:
- ...impersonate Freddie Mercury
- ...wear that trademark yellow jacket
- ...grow a full mustache
- ...go onstage wielding Mercury's favored half microphone stand
While Martel's voice is eerily similar to Mercury's, he doesn't look like him. On the other hand, Malek sort of does, especially in that 1985 Live Aid Concert sequence. Here is a short comparison of the 1985 concert and 2018 movie.
What Marc Martel is is the male version of Marnie Nixon, who provided the singing for Deborah Kerr in The King and I, Natalie Wood in West Side Story and Audrey Hepburn for My Fair Lady.
On thing I can predict is that Harry Styles won't be the playing Mick Jagger in an upcoming film of the The Rolling Stones, announced almost three years ago. Why? He doesn't look like Mick.
On the other hand, Rami Malek is a natural. That is really Malek to the left. Mick can do his own singing in the film, although Malek and Martel could assist.
