Day 172 of the Lower Puna Eruption, and nothing to report.
***************
I read the Sunday Star Advertiser yesterday and kept saying, if only they had listened to me. For example, the front page headline was entitled CRUNCH TIME FOR RAIL AUDIT. Read my Huffington Post article of 2010: (sorry, you will need to click on that article to see the complete right side)
A dozen years ago Lisbon hosted what they termed as an Ocean Expo, but there was nothing...nothing, of any nautical moment. Nearly a quarter of century before that, Okinawa showcased Aquapolis. Say 2020 is selected as the target year, the timing would be ideal for another ocean expo.
To link with the “Lockheed Martin/Disney” platform, rather than set aside a plot of land and have various countries build structures that will become obsolete, there already are twenty ideal locations awaiting inspiration. Honolulu is suffering through the pangs of planning a mass transit system. Funding crises will no doubt appear, again and again. Why not find a way to allow international teams to finance, design and manage these stations?
Like in EPCOT Center around a lake, each site would feature a different region of the world interfacing, in principle, with the Pacific Ocean. A China village, with the architecture, restaurants and entertainment otions of that country. Maybe they’ll bring and leave two pandas. Same for Japan, Korea, the European Community, South America, Africa...and more.
The other article on the front page yesterday had to do with the Trump administration's attempt to curtail research on climate change. I had a HuffPo seven years ago entitled WHY DO REPUBLICANS LIKE FOSSIL FUELS AND NOT CARE THAT MUCH FOR THE ENVIRONMENT? Throughout the Donald-Hillary presidential campaign I kept underscoring the danger of Trump because of his insane views on the environment, calling global warming a hoax, summarized here.
During his transition after election I warned about the EPA transition lead, Scott Pruitt who was already suing the EPA on global warming. So Trump makes Pruitt the head of EPA. Scientists are fearing that politics is intruding on their research? It's a lot worse than that. Yes, Trump changed gears a few days ago by saying that maybe there might not be a hoax involved, but who cares what he says anymore.
Then on page A2, Trump is still waffling on the assassination of Jamal Khashoggi, where nearly two weeks ago I said:
President Donald Trump is in a bind, for he has loyalty to the Saudi royal family. My gut feeling is that when all is said and done, the family will admit that a simple discussion session in Istanbul went wrong, leading to the death of Khashoggi. But, then, how will they explain why those interrogators arrived with a bone saw?Turkey's President Recep Erdogan indicated that he will tomorrow, or so, announce full details. He is waiting for some serious concessions from Saudi Arabia to soften this supposedly truthful expose'.
Okay, enough of trying to be scholarly. Shifting gears, two years ago in this blog site I reported on Shirokiya's Japan Village Walk, specifically, my wagyu beef meal. I mentioned that the costs were reasonable for the quality of the meat, but that no one was eating but me, although perhaps there was a second order somewhere in this entire collection of these food outlets. Soon thereafter, wagyu alley closed down...until soon.
On pages A10 and A11 yesterday was an ad, stating that their Gourmet Plaza would on November 1 have an opening fair where signature dishes were to be 50% off. Wagyu steak, for example would now be $24, from $48 two years ago. Two warnings:- They will use American wagyu beef, which is two to five times cheaper than Japanese wagyu. I have not yet experienced a worthy American wagyu beef meal.
- They will be offering a coupon for $1 beer. But beer is already $1 in this eating court.
I'll stop quibbling and share with you something new reported on page A15: buried beneath 70 meters of seafloor sediment are microbes that may be about 75 million years old. You can read about them here. Sure, there are 2.5 billion-year-old bacteria fossils (left), but they are not alive today.
The oldest human ever reached 122 years old. Ask a biologist what is the oldest living thing, and the best you can get is a quaking aspen tree in Utah at 80,000 years, but only because it is possible that the root system beginning life was that long ago.
That photo to the left is the equipment linking with the oldest living thing on the planet today. What is the secret to staying alive so long with no sunlight nor nutrients? This bacterium uses about 0.00000000001 joules of energy/year to survive. We use about 100 joules/second.
-Hurricane Willa just reached 160 MPH and was southwest of Cabo Corrientes heading for landfall today:
In the West Pacific, Tropical Storm Yutu could become a typhoon and threaten a range of islands:
