THE GENESIS OF SIMPLE SOLUTIONS FOR PLANET EARTH AND HUMANITY

On this Sunday, in my 17th year of this blog, I thought, my life is now not as exciting as in the past.  While I did last month return from a nearly two-month long trip that took us from Honolulu to Seattle (by air); then a very long cruise through the Panama Canal to Southhampton, UK; another flight to Amsterdam, Netherlands; a European Christmas Cruise to Budapest; flight to Zurich for a couple of days; then a 27 hour return by plane to Honolulu; certainly more than virtually every one of you reading this has accomplished the past year, relatively, my earlier experiences were more memorable.

So I thought, over the next few months, I would select a few of my past postings to re-share with you, utilizing mostly my nostalgia day, Tuesday, for this purpose.  But I'll begin today with a grand summary.

  • My first blog was published on 29April2008.  How long ago is that?
    • Go back to your first day of kindergarten.
    • Imagine how long it took to get you to become a senior in college.
    • In blog time, I'm only three months from graduation with a degree.
    • However, while you had weekends, holidays and vacation periods
      • I've published a posting every day from 29April2008.
      • Well, there were a couple days when I couldn't, like when I spent time China.  Google, which handles this blog, has had a feud with China since 2010.  So in my China trips I've sometime published through a Russian site (and that was an experience that will appear as a nostalgic return, for the comments were scarily incredible), or was able to find a hotel brave enough to help me overcome the ban, illegally.  As I think about this now.....that was pure stupidity, just for this blog.
      • Amazingly enough, for the past almost 17 years, I've never been too sick or incapacitated to post something, even when I one day had vertigo.
  • My posting today will be number 6229.
    • As of earlier today, I had 3,456,937 visits, so dividing by the appropriate number of days, there have been 555 people/day from somewhere reading this blog.
    • Last month, the  average was 917/day.
  • However, the number of views, as counted, changed a decade or so ago when I stopped paying Google to keep track of them, causing the number to significantly drop.  So the 3.5 million views could well be much higher.
    • 221 "countries" have visited this site.
      • Yes, there are only 195 official countries, with 193 in the United Nations.
      • But entities like Antarctica and small islands as part of other countries are official domains, and this number is close to 250.
      • So perhaps 25 or so places have yet to see this blog.
      • 48% of visitors are from the USA.
      • However, #2 is Singapore at 15%, which is a surprise because it is only 1.8% the population of the U.S.  There must be someone there sending this site to his /her links.
      • #3 is the UK with 4%, #4 Germany 2.3%, and #5 India 2.3%.  If you look at the top of the right column, this blog site can be translated into most languages.  But you need to first find this site, so the leading countries pretty much are English-speaking.
  • My first posting was on 29April2008.  Very simple.

For the longest time, the day when the most visitors (3,356) clicked on this blog site was 27February2010 on THE CHILE EARTHQUAKE. Why? Probably because this posting was linked to my Huffington Post article of that day reporting on HAWAII TSUNAMI. Natural disasters tend to increase readership. However, on 6March2017, THE WONDERS OF ALCOHOL drew 6498. Further, too, on 6June2017, the one-month tally of visitors was 70,219, or 2340/day. However, on 18December2018, a record 27,775 people read that posting. On 22April2019, after 13,000 and 19,000 pings the previous days, a second all-time high of 27,318 was reached. The daily average has been about 500/day.

    • More on the Most Popular Posts
      • #1 has long been THE WONDER OF QATAR.  Why, I don't know.
      • Just noticed that this column  entry is keeping up with times, for the bottom posting, THE 60'S:  GIRL GROOVES, now has a higher number than a couple that previously ranked higher.  That number represents the number of times this site has been visited for that particular posting..  Click on GIRL GROOVES.  Great songs, if you long for music of those days.
    • The section on Viewers and Visitors shows the 221 countries.  Note, however, that the total pageviews is only 1.15 million, while the number at the very top of this pace shows total pageviews at 3,458,063 (the number I saw when writing this posting).  Why the difference?  I guess what I quit paying for is not related to the overall viewership.
    • Next, GLOBAL WARMING.
      • This blog site began with energy and the environment, my professional specialties, mostly because one of the books I wrote, published in 2007, had to do  with my my knowledge of these fields.
      • When another book was published on topics I had little knowledge of, I thought, oh heck, why not just comment on anything and everthing, so the blog expanded.
    • Noticed that the PRICE OF OIL site does not work.  Will need to repair it.
    • For BETTING ODDS CALCULATOR, just click on Go to.

    • Next, everything you will want to know about oil.
    • ALL TIME NUMBERS.  I need to update this.  For example, the Dow Jones Industrial Average record close occurred on 4December2024 at 45,014.04, with an intraday all time high of 45,073.63.
  • You can find earlier versions of these postings from BLOG ARCHIVES.
  • The ODDS CALCULATOR is redundant.  It also appears earlier in the right column.  Need to delete it.
  • Want to know how fat you are?  Just type in your weight and height.  You can change kg to pounds and metres to inches.
  • Finally ABOUT ME.
So over the next few months, I will weekly look back to some of my more consequential postings, mostly in chronological order.  In fact, I'll do the first one today, going back to 31March2009, when I was traveling in Japan on a roots search of my father's father:  THE SEARCH FOR KENJIRO'S GRANDMOTHERS.
  • That colorful symbol came to be one day when I was looking at the family mon, and colorized it.  There was a four-year period, from 2007 to 2010, when I wrote three books, each using this symbol on the front cover.

  • But returning to that posting of 31March2009, I went back to 1963 when I was a trainee at a sugar company in Kilauea, Kauai.
A very old man came up to me one day and said he had known my grandfather. My initial reaction was mild astonishment, as while I knew that my father had been born on Kauai, I don’t recall him talking much about his parents. That individual said my grandfather was involved with the Wainiha Powerhouse and was extraordinary, in that he was very well educated and served as a supervisor. Unfortunately, he died only a few years after arriving and was buried up on the hill above the town. My family knew I was on this island. Why had no one said that I should visit my grandfather’s burial spot, for the culture of even Hawaii Japanese, was to honor the dead. Then again, maybe someone did and I did not pay any attention.

In September of 2005, Pearl and I visited Misa Tamura, the son-in-law of that older gentleman, to find the gravestone on Kauai. Misa, himself, was well into his 80’s by then, and he asked if we also wanted to see my grandfather’s powerhouse, for somehow, the community even then, a century later, referred to the site as Takahashi’s powerhouse. The Wainiha Powerhouse was commissioned in 1906, and today produces 4 MW with essentially the same incoming pipes and generation equipment. Around this time, my brother, Stan, found the earlier photo and sent me a note that the name on the gravestone was Kenjiro Takahashi. Thus, I learned for the first time that I was named after this grandfather, for my middle name is Kenji.
  • For the record, that hydropower plant is today (2025), nearly 120 years after it was commissioned, still producing 4 MW.  But to continue.
There were still huge doubts on what was real until I had the good fortune to sit next to Elsie and David Ikegami at a 50th year Wedding Anniversary party of a mutual friend. David was born in Utah, was a Mormon, but lived most of his life in Hawaii. At the age of 80, he ran one of those Mormon family centers famous for conducting these root searches. I visited his office and passed on all the information I had, which was not much. Within two weeks his staff found a nine page document signed by the Secretary of the Territory of Hawaii showing that Kenjiro came to Kauai from America, was originally from Hokkaido, Japan, and served as a luna, or supervisor, at the Kilauea Plantation. He fell at the hydro site in 1906 and died in the same year that the powerhouse commenced operations. Well, with most of what I thought was largely made up now turning out to be true, the search was intensified with a trip to Utashinai, his home village, and will continue for Kenjiro’s grandmothers in Akita on Honshu and Otaru, just outside of Sapporo. Even if I find nothing else, there is enough already to write a book, tracing this possible female samurai Robin Hood to me. At this time, this one looms as a novel.

So what did I find in my subsequent roots search?  Was there a female samurai in family?  The unusual nature of my roots was that every Japanese person I know in Hawaii and USA in general, had parents or grandparents who came from Honshu and Kyushu, mostly from around Hiroshima.  My father's father came from Hokkaido.  A lot more to come about how all that led to my life where I have flown more than 2 million miles just on Star Alliance and been on special around the world trips more than a dozen times.

Summary: Not good.

Financial Times provides frequently updated electoral college information on Biden vs Trump.  Ignore all the hype you will hear.  Go to this site for the true data.

Here is an interesting graphic by The New York Times:

Donald Trump actually leads Joe Biden in the age category from late forties to mid sixties, then also high seventies to low eighties.  Interesting.  Further:

But winning only a couple of slices of the country’s age spectrum isn’t enough to win a presidential election. The CNN and NBC polls both showed Trump trailing by double digits nationwide. New polls yesterday showed him losing in Arizona, Florida, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

From Slate:

...he’s on that monoclonal antibody cocktail that we don’t even know the side effects to, because it hasn’t been well studied. Then he’s on the remdesivir, which is really a brand new medication in the context of COVID, which itself can cause alterations to your brain and your behavior. And then add on the steroids. It’s just very hard to parse out in the context of lots of different things happening and having a potential effect on his brain right now.

About steroids:

We tell people that it can make them feel really hyper. It can make them behave very strangely. I’ll warn family members that they may see a personality change just so that people are aware. If somebody already has a preexisting condition like anxiety or a psychotic disorder, we’re very, very careful about that decision to prescribe steroids, because for some patients, it’s actually not worth it. I’ve had patients who say, “I have terrible anxiety and steroids, even though I need it for my asthma exacerbation, steroids are actually worse.”

I was sent this 8 min 30 sec clip on how important SPAM is to Hawaii, so I thought I'd revisit this processed meat, which I reviewed two and a half years ago:

IS THERE ANY FOOD WORSE THAN SPAM

That can of Spam in this photo from that posting?  Still have it.  The expiration date is next month.

Thus, I felt compelled to take my meal enhancement to the opposite extreme.  I had a piece of Japanese Wagyu Beef from Miyazaki in my freezer, and noticed the first appearance of Matsutake Mushroom at Marukai.

The wine:

As Japanese Wagyu Beef sells for $100/pound at Marukai, note that this Matsutake Mushroom only went for $60/pound.  But this is because the quality was low.  I did not get that sought after essence of fragrance that in Japan can command $1,000/pound.

Sticking to food, I add this heart-touching tale about bread, an old lady and wisdom of Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia:

I tend to question this sort of tale, so went to Snopes.  If you have any time, read that very long review.  Their conclusion was that there was something close to this story that might have happened in Indonesia, but they found no conclusive proof that LaGuardia, of later airport fame, was involved with this story.  At one time I placed this landing site as the worst in the world.  However, it is being upgraded for re-commissioning next year.

I'm now at #80 of my favorite tunes, and it is To Know Him is to Love Him, by the Teddy Bears.  The song was released just when I was starting my freshman year in college, and transitions tend to be emotional.  My roommate thought the Him was God or Jesus.  Only when researching for this posting did I learn that TNHitLH is on the gravestone of Phil Spector's dad, who committed suicide.  Phil not only wrote the music, but was one of the three Teddy Bears, the only group he ever joined.

Seven years ago I published an article that became one of my most popular:  The 60's--Girl Grooves.  Here are a couple of quotes:

The Ronettes began as a family act and originally were of African-American, Cherokee, Irish-American and Puerto Rican heritage.  The lead singer, Veronica Bennett, changed her name to Ronnie, from which came the Ronettes, and she certainly took a roller coaster of a life, beginning with their linkage to Phil Spector.  In 1963 they recorded Be My Baby, featuring Phil's Wall of Sound.

Cher performed her first back-up vocal for this song.  She was then the girlfriend of Sonny Bono, who was working for Spector, who began living with Ronnie.  They eventually got married.  The Ronettes accompanied the Beatles on a 14 stop tour through America in 1966.  But Phil kept Ronnie home in jealousy, so the group had to completely reconform.  His mental illness was already undoing him (to the right more recently).  RS after divorcing PF reformed an entirely new Ronettes, but that failed.  Ronnie Spector  (above photo) continues to tour today.  She turns 70 on August 10.

She is now 78, but, apparently, still tours.

Of course, there is that recent turmoil in Phil Spector's life, who in 2009 was convicted of second degree murder.  Here are Helen Mirren as his lawyer and Al Pacino as PF in the 2013 movie entitled Phil Spector, suggesting that, perhaps, there were extenuating circumstances.

He is now 81 years old and will be eligible for parole in 2025.

Typhoon Chan-Hom brought a lot of rain to Japan, but the eye turned away from Japan:

A DAY OF DINING AND ENTERTAINMENT IN HONOLULU

The next two days will be devoted to food, local today, then international cuisine tomorrow.  To begin, yesterday I picked up a huli-huli chicken from Hawaii's Favorite Kitchens (the branch next to Rainbow Drive Inn) and went to the lookout where the road passes around Diamond Head.  Sometimes you can see as far away as the Big Island from this spot.  This $8 bento features half a chicken that sticks out of the container:

This is my second experience with this feast, so I was better prepared this time to consume it in my car without doing any major damage to the interior.  There is something about just rotisseried/barbequed chicken that is addictive.  While there I noticed a bronze plaque of Amelia Earhart.  On 11 January 1935 she took off from Wheeler Field and made the first solo flight from Hawaii to California in 18 hours and 17 minutes.  In 1937 she attempted an around the world journey and disappeared somewhere in the West Pacific.  The more recent adventures of Solar Impulse 2 have been covered in this blog.  The plane remains in the University of Hawaii hangar at Barbers Point awaiting Spring.

I then went to the Ala Wai Golf Course for my twice a week walk.  I noticed two colleagues, former Electrical Engineering chairman Bharat Kinariwala (left) and former Civil Engineering chairman Ed Cheng.  This is where we go when we retire.  I stopped by Pearl's Gold Tree:

Our 15 Craigside Monday Night Table last night highlighted two gastronomical sensations, Kir Royale (Creme de Cassis with Champagne) and truffles infused boiled peanuts:

Drink #2 was Kir, which replaces the Champagne with Chardonnay.  Some went so far as having 15 Craigside Royale, which was Creme de Cassis and Stolichnaya Vodka over ice.  As dinner was Okinawan Shoyu Pork and Simmered Daikon (turnips), for dessert we had andagi (fried large donut holes from Okinawa) and lemon meringue pie.

These Monday night sessions have been gaining a following, for I just received an e-mail from a friend who wants to donate bottles of liquor for our cause.  That's the third altruistic gesture.

I noticed that our PBS channel had on 60's Girl Grooves, which I enriched exactly two years ago in one of my most viewed postings.  To minimize the fundraising campaign interludes, as I happened to record last week PBS's My Yearbook:  1960-63, and both programs focused on the early 60's period, I watched both together.  To make up for my transgression, I provide phone numbers you can contact:

Tomorrow I feature the best chef and restaurant in the world.  Then, for the rest of the week I will have a space theme, for 2500 delegates from 75 countries just convened in Honolulu for the first  International Astronomical Union General Assembly gathering in the U.S. since 1988. The Thirty Meter Telescope controversy will gain some notoriety with an Aloha Aina Unity March through Waikiki on Sunday.  Various activities are open to the public, but many of them require free tickets.

-
Super Typhoon Soudelor, now at 150 MPH, is heading for central Taiwan, and should caused havoc, but most likely will only barely affect Taipei:

Tropical Storm Guillermo remains a very stout 70 MPH, but the current projected track shows  a northernly track, largely avoiding the Hawaiian Islands:

But you can't predict with 100% accuracy, so be aware.

HAPPY ST. PATRICK'S DAY

I annually write about St. Patrick.  My first attempt was on 17March2009.  As my recent postings have been too too long, and I missed doing anything yesterday, I'm entering two today, this one a short selfie:

I actually bought this Mickey Mouse hat on St. Patrick's Day at EPCOT Center in 2006.  Happy St. Pat's Day!  In my move to 15 Craigside I'm still mulling over whether to throw it away or keep it for memories.

One of my most visited postings, which appeared in August 2013 was

     THE 60'S: GIRL GROOVES

Tonight on your PBS channel is this same program.

2013: MY YEAR IN REVIEW

This is a blog site mostly about renewable energy and the environment to Save Planet Earth and Humanity.  However, the postings that attracted the most viewers had to do with entertainment, rainbows, scary animals, my travels/dining and OTEC.  Here are the top entries for 2013:
Close to 200,000 clicks were made to this site in 2013, averaging around 500/day.  Two hundred thirteen countries have visited Planet Earth and Humanity.

My low light of the year had to do with my two (plus one in December 2012) visits to the Queen's Emergency Center.  Just scroll down to the next posting to view the vivid details.  However, these ailments had to do with a swollen thumb, fish bone in throat and separated pinky, hardly what you might call life-threatening.

Otherwise, it was not a bad year, for I attained my primary goal for the year, which was to reach a golf handicap of 14, something I had never accomplished in my life.  I also shot a 76 last week, and my handicap actually settled at 13.  I was ready to descend into a single digit when I hurt my left hand.

My Ultimate Global Adventure (MUGA) took 52 days through Sydney, Bangkok, Japan, Seoul, Shanghai, Beijing, Frankfurt, DC, Denver, San Francisco, and a two week period through Napa, Sonoma and Alexander Valleys for golf and wine.  You know I had too much of a good thing for me to say that I got tired of Dom Perignon and caviar.  While I beat David Niven who took all of 80 days, got to admit that his $2 million gambling winnings and a new wife outdid me.  Perhaps the highlight of this trip was that gold koi, which now represents Pearl in Japan at the Matsumoto Castle.  There is only one gold, so you can't miss it if you go there.

OTEC also seemed to make a revival this year, for several of my postings in addition to #5 above were well pinged.  Two in particular are noteworthy:
If Tomoyo Nonaka can become Prime Minister of Japan, that will significantly enhance prospects for OTEC and the Blue Revolution.  Current PM Shinzo Abe keeps shooting himself in the foot, so some change can be expected perhaps even as early as next year.  Otherwise, Lockheed Martin could well build an OTEC facility for China, and Ocean Thermal Energy Corporation might beat LM by constructing an OTEC system in the Caribbean.

My final life change looms with sale of my apartment and a move into 15 Craigside next year.  I hate to leave my rainbows and sunsets, but it's time to move on.

Well, let me end with my person of the year.  Sure TIME chose Pope Francis, however, I have someone a lot more exciting:

Miley Cyrus is my person of the year, for she not only defined the term twerking (above), the #2 word of the year, but did a selfie (the #1 word) of herself, as shown in the 30December2013 issue of TIME:

Last I heard, her father, Billy Ray Cyrus of Achy Breaky Heart fame, and her mother, Tish, have called off their divorce.  TOMORROW:  ALMOST SURE PREDICTIONS FOR 2014 AND BEYOND.

Oh, by the way, this is already 2014 for

Dubai supposedly broke the record for "Largest Fireworks Display."

This is getting ridiculous, but the Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 72 to 16,577, for the 52nd time this year, a new all-time record.  Just about every day since I sold my stocks last week this record has been broken.

Tropical Cyclone Bejisa is now at 110 MPH, will further strengthen, and now seems destined to plow right through Reunion.  I have so many friends there.
