Avengers: Endgame led revenues for the third straight weekend, is up to nearly $2.5 billion, and only $0.3 billion from overtaking Avatar as the highest grossing film of all time. Avatar 2 will be released on 21 December 2021.
I went to see Endgame yesterday and could not keep up with the relationships, for I avoid these types of film. So I put together a scorecard to understand what happened in this Disney and Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film. As the latest and "last" Avengers was released on April 26, no real harm in divulging all the secrets in this posting. Here are two references ( 1 and 2 ) to provide some background:
I went to see Endgame yesterday and could not keep up with the relationships, for I avoid these types of film. So I put together a scorecard to understand what happened in this Disney and Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) film. As the latest and "last" Avengers was released on April 26, no real harm in divulging all the secrets in this posting. Here are two references ( 1 and 2 ) to provide some background:- About a decade ago Disney bought struggling Marvel Studios, after they had sold off Spider-Man to Sony and both X-Men and Fantastic Four to Fox.
- Disney only had lesser characters like Iron Man and Thor.
- However, the Disney/MCU franchise has been incredibly successful, so much so that:
- In 2017, Sony and Disney teamed to make Spider-Man: Homecoming.
- Just this March, Disney and Fox merged, meaning that X-Men and Fantastic Four characters will join what is left of Avengers.
- In Avengers: End Game, Tony Stark (Ironman, played by Robert Downey Jr.) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) die:
- Rotten Tomatoes bestowed 95%/89% ratings.
- Is Tony Stark ever returning? Sure, in prequels, but, in this comic-book multi-verse, it doesn't matter, for Endgame featured a time machine, where the characters returned to the past, and....you get the point. Endgame featured something iconoclastic: by changing events, those who died actually did not, and will continue on into the future.
- Okay, though, but isn't there a Black Widow movie soon to be released? And, remember, Johansson is dead. She has appeared in six Marvel movies, beginning with Iron Man 2 in 2010, but finally got a solo lead.
- So about how can she return, this new film surely will be a prequel.
Here are some stars you might not know appearing in those above films. Let's start with the voice of Rocket Racoon (yes, he is a racoon): in the more recent films, Bradley Cooper.
Oh yeah, Groot is a bit varied, with early voicing by Kevin Michael Richardson, but, also Vin Diesel, and most probably too in Endgame. Thanos, the villain in the last two Avengers: Josh Brolin:
There are officially six Infinity Stones, which are gems (here is one guess), but sometime there are more:
- Time: green (emerald) or orange
- Mind: blue (topaz) or yellow
- Soul: orange (amber) or green
- Space: purple or blue (sapphire)
- Reality: yellow or red (ruby)
- Power: red or purple (amethyst)
- Ego: white
- Rhythm: pink
- Build: red
- Death: yellow
- Continuity: black
For a complete list of the stars, click on THIS. Not listed is Edward Norton, who was the original Incredible Hulk in 2008.
What about the future?
- Dark Phoenix (7 June 2019, more like X-Woman): Sophie Turner, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy.
- Spider-Man: Far from Home (5 July 2019), with Tom Holland and Jake Gyllenhaal as a villain, mostly in Europe.
- The New Mutants (3 April 2020): X-Men with new actors and a horror spin.
- Gambit (TBD): Channing Tatum with a twist.
- Spider-Man 3 (TBD): they got to use something else, for there was a Spider-Man 3 movie in 2007 with Tobey Maguire.
- Black Panther 2 (TBD): BP1 was the first suprhero movie ever nominated for Best Picture, Chadwick Boseman and Lupita Nyong'o returning.
- Doctor Strange 2 (TBD): Benedict Cumberbatch is back.
- Captain Marvel 2 (TBD): Brie Larson.
- Guardians of the Galaxy 3 (TBD).
- Black Widow prequel (TBD): Scarlett Johansson.
- Shang-Chi (TBD): the first Asian superhero, with six actors being considered, including Henry Golding from Crazy Rich Asians.
- The Eternals (TBD): Angelina Jolie.
- Ms. Marvel (TBD): Kamala Khan as first Muslim superhero, to probably appear in Captain Marvel 2 with Brie Larson. Actress playing Khan???
- Venom 2 (TBD): Tom Hardy and Woody Harrelson.
- Morbius (TBD): Jared Leto.
- Logan spinoff: will center on little girl Laura.
- Disney/Marvel on TV: WandaVision (Elizabeth Olsen), Loki (Tom Hiddleston), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Falcon & Winter Soldier, Ghost Rider, Helstrom.
So to answer the question as to whether there will be another Avengers film, yes, of course. It will take a dozen years for Avatar 2 to make an appearance in 2021, and production is already on for Avatar 3, Avatar 4 and Avatar 5. A third of A4 has already been filmed. So when will Avengers 5 (Endgame was #4) be released? Oh, what about 2031?
