This is Saturday, 5May2012, where Cinco de Mayo commemorates a Mexican battle victory over France 150 years ago. Interestingly enough, this is not a Federal holiday, nor an occasion of much celebration for Mexico, as that would be Mexican Independence Day on September 16.
In the USA, this is the equivalent of St. Patrick's Day for consumption of alcohol (tequila and margheritas especially), plus, of course, honorification of Mexican culture and heritage. Mesquite, Nevada is in the region where CdM is particularly observed, and Kenji's Golf Safari will have a Mexican lunch followed by a grand tequila reception followed by a night revolving around the Mayweather-Cotto boxing match and, perhaps, some gambling, as we're staying in the Eureka Casino, where Carla Marrero, originally from Kona and Maui, takes good care of us. She recommended Gregory's, where we had a fabulous steak dinner last night, the total cost for the group with wine, including tax and tip, at a cost much lower than my individual meals at Jiro's and Ryu Gin.

Honest to goodness, our Moon tonight will be 14% bigger and 30% brighter tonight. The above shows a comparison of largest and smallest. How can the Moon change in size? The orbit is ellipsoidal, and the distance varies from 252,000 miles to 221,800, so watch for the moonrise tonight as it is somewhat rare that this shortest distance occurs at the same time as a full moon. The previous Supermoon occurred in March of last year, and some blamed the Great Tohoku Earthquake, Tsunami and Nuclear Catastrophe on this phenomenon. Nah, but tides will be at maximum and minimum. Some believe that this gravitational pull can affect your body, causing weirdness. Again, nah, I don't think so.
