For most of my adult life I've been troubled by a high frequency sound in both of my ears. My younger brother also has this problem, so I chalked it up to genetic inheritance. Perhaps 150 million Americans have at least a mild form of this problem. Up to 40% of soldiers returning from Middle East wars suffer from this ailment.
The older I get, the more difficult I find it to understand a conversation when I'm sitting in the back seat of a moving car. When I'm giving a lecture in an auditorium with any background noise, I sometimes cannot understand as well today questions from the audience.
About a week ago, a series of incidents could well have changed my life. All this was reported in my posting on "A Simple Solution for High Blood Pressure." Basically, for the past few days, I have gone on a low salt and no alcohol diet to stabilize my blood pressure. This has generally worked to bring me back to normality.
Well, tonight I went to bed early and awoke at midnight to go to the bathroom. When I tried sleeping again, I kept hearing sounds on the roof, somewhat scaring me that, perhaps, a burglar was trying to enter. There was a perception that some TV noise was coming from a neighbor and I heard the apartment creak a few times. These sounds were new...and it suddenly occurred to me that the ringing in my ears was reduced, significantly. It must be that low salt diet and not the lack of alcohol, for my brother has this same ear condition, consumes a very high salt diet (because he exercises several hours virtually every day and need to replenish eletrolytes), but does not drink alcohol.
You can go to Google and generally find that there are hundreds of reasons for ringing of the ears, or Tinnitus. The cures are equally varied, but they almost always do not work well.
In this search I stumbled across a blog by Barry Keate on Tinnitus Formulas. Essentially, it is all related to what you eat...and do not eat. While some say do not drink coffee or eat chocolate, Keate blames sugar and substitutes (like aspartame), flavor enhancers (like MSG), fats and SALT:
Salt has an immediate effect on tinnitus and always makes it worse. Excess salt restricts blood vessels, increases blood pressure and reduces blood flow into the ears, eyes and brain. Increased blood pressure is directly linked to increased tinnitus. I speak with many people who are beset with serious tinnitus but don’t make the connection between blood pressure and tinnitus loudness. Many of these people will chow down on chips and other salty snacks, at the same time bemoaning the ringing in their ears. When salt intake is reduced, many of these same people report a lessening of tinnitus sounds.
There are high levels of salt in most processed and pre-packaged foods. A can of soup contains more sodium than the recommended daily allowance for an adult person. This is a primary reason to be very careful of these products.
I quote him in entirety because the above explanation totally clarifies my problem. He recommends the Mediterranean Diet:

I'm now old and never realized SALT could be the cause of my Tinnitus. Frankly, I'm shocked, and almost embarrassed. I even wrote an entire chapter on nutrition (SIMPLE SOLUTIONS for Humanity) and never had a clue. I would have to think that for a whole number of you, this is big news, so go ahead, TWIT it to your friends, announce it on your FACEBOOK page and let the world know! Unless you have a special medical problem (as for example I have a colleague who has to consume a lot of salt), even if you don't cure your ear ringing, with the above type diet you should lose some weight and live longer.

If you suffer from constant ringing in the ears, try to keep yourself busy and do not pay attention to the tinnitus. The more you think about it, the more bothersome it becomes. Play some kind of soothing background music at a low volume; this would help in masking the noises of tinnitus.

We are all exposed to tinnitus due to career, environment or due to age. My experiences were as a result of job hazard and age factor.
