The longest day in the Northern Hemisphere (shortest in the Southern Hemisphere) is today, when the summer solstice (SS) just occurred at 17:16 UTC (7:16AM Hawaii, 5:16PM Greenwich Mean Time...yes, close enough to UTC), which stands for, of all the things, Coordinated Universal Time (Universal Time, Coordinated, to create that acronym), kept by the average (calibrated to sea level...you don't want to know the specific details) of 200 atomic clocks, and known in the Department of Defense as Zulu Time. This was the exact time when the North Pole was the closest it gets to the Sun, and is one moment in time for the whole globe.
As you know, we have summers and winters because our Earth carefully tilts throughout the year. When our planet axis is exactly perpendicular, which happens twice each year, and are called equinoxes, those are the first days of Spring and Fall. If this obliquity did not occur, there would be no seasons. Next year the SS will occur at 05:14 on June 20.
If you lived in New England and took a photo every eight days or so at 8:30AM (the three lines show exposure since sunrise) for a year, above is how the Sun would look (guess which one is of today?). Can someone explain to me why the chimney shadow points towards the sun??? This is noted to be the first analemma, credited to Dennis di Cicco, taken from 1978 to 1979. What all the above means is that this is the first day of Summer. Yes, the Druids do gather at Stonehenge (left), this year led by Chief Druid Arthur Pendragon on the right.Mind you, this is not the day when the Sun is directly overhead at noon. Hawaii has something called Lahaina Noon (name only officially invented by the Bishop Museum two decades ago), where there is no shadow twice each year. To confuse matters even more, Lahaina Noon does not occur at noon, but rather at different times and days depending on your island. On Oahu, for example, Lahaina Noon (go out and not see any pole shadow) happened in Kaneohe on May 27 at 12:28PM and will occur again on July 11 at 12:42, while in downtown Honolulu, it was May 28 at 12:28PM and comes on July 16 at 12:37PM. Yes, there seems to be no geographical nor temporal sense to this.

Good day on Wall Street, as the Dow Jones Industrials shot up 110 to 12,190, and so did the rest of the world markets. Even gold went up, $6/toz to $1547, but oil is stabilizing, the NYMEX at $94/barrel and
Brent Spot at $111/barrel.

Hurricane Beatriz, which whipped through the Acapulco area, is now a tropical storm at 55 MPH, is heading away from the Mexican coastline, and should weaken further over the next few days.
