THE REMARKABLE LIFE OF SUSAN BOYLE

But before I get into Susan Boyle:

....men who consumed more than 6.5 drinks per week and women who consumed more than seven drinks per week had greater than a 1-in-1,000 lifetime risk of dying from an alcohol-related disease or injury. The risk jumps to greater than 1 in 100 for both sexes if they have more than 8.5 drinks a week. At 14 drinks a week, Americans’ lifetime risk climbs to 1 in 25.

You must know Susan Boyle.  But if you don't, here is a remarkable life.

  • Born Susan Magdalane Boyle on 1April1961....yes, April Fool's Day.  Youngest of nine children from a family in the Scottish industrial town of Blackburn, where her father was a miner.  Her mother was 45 when Susan was born.
  • Had learning difficulties, and suffers from autism.
  • Trained at the Edinburgh Acting School, and performed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
    • I've been to four of them, and of course, never saw her.
    • This is the largest entertainment/book/whatever artsy festival in the world, in the month August, when it is usually still somewhat coldish.
    • Would like to go one more time.
  • Was motivated to seek a musical career to pay tribute to her mother.
  • In 1998, used her life savings to record a demo tape, mailed copies out to record labels, got no response.
  • Took six different buses to get from Blackburn, where she lived in the cottage where she grew up, to Glasgow to perform her audition for Britain's Got Talent.
  • Had applied for the third year of BGT in 2008, at the age of 47.
  • Here is that fabulous audition.
Boyle's first performance of I Dreamed a Dream lasted for two minutes and 25 seconds. When the clip arrived on Youtube, 1,100,000 watched it in the same day. She became an Internet phenomenon within three days, after it had been seen by 3.5 million people, and a global superstar within five days. 26 million people had seen it at the end of the week. Globally, it was the most watched clip that week. 120 million people saw it after the second week, outdistancing The Twilight Saga: New Moon (2009) trailer by 90 million views. By the time of the final, 220 million had seen the clip. She is the most hit upon Youtube phenomenon of all time, and the most Googled lady on Earth.
  • About that BGT, she came in second to a dance troupe.
  • The day after this final, was admitted to a private psychiatric clinic in London because of her erratic behavior.  Prime Minister Gordon Brown wished her well.  The White House of George W. Bush invited her to perform there.
  • Her first Album, I Dreamed a Dream, was released in 2009 and became the fastest selling UK debut album of all time.  Topped Billboard for 6 straight weeks.
  • Performed for Pope Benedict VI in 2010, and later that year, had a television special where she sang a duet with her idol, Elaine Paige, and in America was the TV Guide Networks' highest rated television special in its history.
  • In 2010 was Time Magazine's seventh most influential person in the world.
  • Diagnosed with Asperger syndrome in 2012, and is also epilectic. Diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 2013.  Supposedly had her first boyfriend in 2014.
  • In the years that followed appeared in several tours, films and documentaries.
  • Suffered a stroke in 2022, but returned to perform in 2025.
  • Still lives in her family home, has never married, even though you might see inaccurate videos.  Said she is too scared of internet dating.  Is a teetotaller.   A video of her relationship status.
  • Watch for a Fox filmed to be titled I Dreamed a Dream.
  • In a Washington Post interview, she is quoted to say:
Modern society is too quick to judge people on their appearances. ... There is not much you can do about it; it is the way they think; it is the way they are. But maybe this could teach them a lesson, or set an example.[148]
  • She is 65 years old and has a net worth of just about $40 million.

To close, you would think that songs staying the longest at #1 on Billboard would have come from Elvis or The Beatles or Michael Jackson or Taylor Swift.  Well, no.  The top three songs to spend the most weeks at #1 in the history of the Billboard Hot 100 are:

#1"  All I Want for Christmas Is You" by Mariah Carey - 22 weeks.  Why?  Makes about $3 million every year since 1994.

#2
"A Bar Song (Tipsy)" by Shaboozey - 19 weeks

#3"Old Town Road" by Lil Nas X featuring Billy Ray Cyrus - 19 weeks [1, 2]
