Summary:
  • For the first time in a long time, we dropped to #2 in new deaths yesterday.
    • 331 to #1 UK with 651 new deaths.
    • #3 Germany had 307 new deaths.
    • #4 Russia had 267 new deaths.
  • We dropped way back in new cases with 37,588 (113 new cases/million population)
    • #1  South Korea  195,370 (3801).
    • #2  Germany  179,888 (2134).
    • #3  France  146,426 (2236).
    • #4  Italy  62,703  (1040).
    • #5  Australia  53,286  (2049).
    • #6  Japan  51,331  (407)
    • Butan  2,131 (2697)
    • China  1513  (1)
  • So where not to go?
    • Certainly don't go to South Korea, Oceania, Europe and assorted other countries.  See here for CDC advisories.  For example they have a level 4 Do Not Travel advisory for South Korea and an avoid travel to Germany status.
    • Tourists are allowed into China, which only has a Level 1 rating (see below), but you are advised to avoid places like Jilin Province and anything close to Shanghai.  However, Hong Kong is at a Level 3 assessment (see below).
    • Japan "only" has 407 new cases/million, but still does not allow tourist travel from foreign countries.  Note that at this not too bad figure, the CDC still considers the country to be at Level 4, or at a VERY HIGH risk assessment level.
    • Apparently, Australia (2049 new cases/million) will allow tourism from next week.  But the CDC advises you don't, for they are at Level 4 (see below).
    • Subject to changes, New Zealand (1909 new cases/million) will permit those from the U.S. to visit beginning May 2.  But why go there now?  CDC Level 4.
    • Clearly you don't want to go to Ukraine or Russia today for other reasons, too.
    • Even the U.S. with only 113 new cases/day yesterday is considered by the CDC to still be in Level 3.
    • CDC provides a map at this site.
Level 4: COVID-19 Very High
On a more positive note, the CDC removed any cruise travel restrictions at the end of last month.  Read the details,  Virtually every cruise line still required a passenger, with exceptions, to be fully vaccinated.  Most major companies are either easing or dropping mask mandates.

A month ago this graphic showed how safe cruises were:
Here is an updated rating of major cruise ships.  If you can't read it, click on THIS.

The Island Princess has all green ratings.  We were supposed to be on that ship if it went around the world.  While that global cruise was cancelled, it would be have been in Lisbon today.

The Celebrity Eclipse so far has all green ratings.  Considering a cruise next month from Honolulu to Vancouver on that ship.  Balcony shows for $2684/person, and this includes premium drinks, WiFi and tips.  If you have access to PERX.com, the price could well be much lower.
