What About American Scientists?
No surprise that Human Events, reported that NAS is atheist-dominated. Of course, this "publication represents powerful conservative voices." It is said that President Ronald Reagan particularly valued this newsletter (which for economic reasons does not now mail out hard copies). Regular contributors include Pat Buchanan and Ann Coulter.

Next, how do Americans compare with the World? Let me tell you in advance. We are right up there with the Middle East on belief in an Afterlife. The French? They must be very smart.
- In 1914 about a third of the more distinguished scientists believed in God.
- By 1933, this fraction dropped to less than one in five (20%).
- In 1998 fewer than one in ten (10%) of National Academy of Sciences members believed in both God and the Afterlife.
- More specifically, only 5% of NAS biologists believed.
- In 1997, Nature reported that 40% of scientists believed in God.
- In 2009, a Pew survey showed that 33% of scientists believed in God.
- The more distinguished scientists tend not to believe in God.
- Biologists especially don't believe.
- The trend is clear that over time, fewer and fewer scientists are now believing in God.
Why? Scientists:
- Tend to be materialistic, and they the Cosmos as matter and energy.
- Look upon religion as an obsolete political tool to control the masses that still, amazingly enough, works.
- Feel religion is irrelevant.
- Are mystified by nature itself and don't need anything supernatural to explain anything.
- Choose to limit their definition of truth to what can be empirically discovered.
Mind you, there are noteworthy bio-scientists who do believe:
- Francis Collins (right), who once headed the National Human Genome Research Institute, and
- James Watson (left), who helped discover the double-helix structure of DNA.
But they are the exceptions to the overwhelming norm:
- Stephen Hawking dismisses belief in god and says that heaven and an afterlife are fairy tales.
- Einstein's disbelief in a biblical God letter sold for more than $3 million.
- Only 3.3% of Royal Society members agree with the statement that a personal god exists (pg. 102, relative to the 5% of biological National Academy of Sciences members).
- The higher one’s intelligence or education level, the less one is likely to be religious (pg. 103, and that intelligence parameter might well explain the low belief rate of National Academy members).
