ALL ABOUT HURRICANES TODAY

There are four ocean storms alive and well today.

  • Hurricane Isaias made landfall over Destin, Florida as a Category 2, zoomed close-by Saban Field at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa, Alabama later this morning, will not influence the football game with Georgia to be held earlier this evening, and essentially dissipated soon thereafter.
    • The eye of Isaias passed over Destin, Florida, 23 miles of Navarre Beach as was first predicted.
    •  Killed four and took out power for hundreds of thousands.
    • Spinoff floods will affect people from Georgia, through North Carolina and into the Eastern seaboard.

  • In the East Pacific Ocean, Hurricane Simon is now a Category 4 at 150 MPH, and will tomorrow breeze pass Puerto Vallarta.  Fortunately, there is a peninsula that will protect the city, dampening the hurricane down to a Category 1.
  • There are two ocean storms in the East Pacific Ocean in the vicinity of Japan.
    • Koguma became a typhoon two days ago, strengthened to 115 MPH yesterday, and is now at 125 MPH.  However, there should a slight weakening tomorrow, and more importantly, gently make a turn to the right and north.  This change in path will continue over the next two days, so Typhoon Koguma will totally miss Japan.

    • Then there is Hurricane Nolo.
      • Dissipated into a remnant on September 16.

The sneaky one is Tropical Depression 15-E.

  • Detected 10 days ago as a non-threatening anomaly predicted to move west, but with a path far south of the Big Island of Hawaii
  • But had staying power, for it maintained a strength of 35MPH for a week.
  • As would be expected, weakened to 30 MPH on September 16, still moving west, but on its way to disappearing.
  • However, today strengthened back to 35 MPH.
  • During the past few days, meteorologists seemed confused on strength and path.  Usually, models can be predicted far ahead of time and are usually right.  Not for 15-E.
  • They are now telling us that this depression will become a tropical storm tomorrow, then make a right turn towards Hawaii, strengthening into Hurricane Nolo by the end of the day.

      • Became a hurricane on September 25, and further strengthened to 105 MPH that day, headed for the Big Island of Hawaii.
      • However, I reported that Nolo would further strengthen to a Category 3 on September 26, but "probably" make a sudden left turn west, and ease past the Big Island on September 27
      • On September 30, Nolo lost hurricane strength, and on October 1 was down to 45 MPH.
      • Up to hurricane strength at 75 MPH on October 2.
      • October 3 up to 115 MPH.
      • 120 MPH on October 4 and 5.
      • Down to 90 MPH on October 6
      • Down to 70 MPH on October 7
      • 60 MPH on October 8 and 9.
      • Today, further weakening to 40 MPH.  But now heading straight to Tokyo.
      • How much longer will Nolo remain a threat?  In three days, it will be a month old.
      • However, in 2023, Cyclone Freddy reached Category 5 strength, and remained at least a tropical storm for 36 days in the Indian Ocean.

I asked Google AI, is October 10 a special day on Planet Earth?  I won't even bother to go into any detail on any of them.

  • Bake and place upside down to cool.
  • Add whatever you want.
  • Originated in the 1600s in Europe.
  • Said to be created in the U.S. by the Pennsylvania Dutch, spurred by an 1839 publication of Lettice Bryan's The Kentucky Housewife, and gained popularity in the 1870s.

WHAT TO WATCH ON YOUR TELEVISION SET THIS WEEKEND

The primary TV attraction today is Hurricane Isaias.

  • Was a Category 2 yesterday at 110 MPH.
  • Strengthened today into a Category 3 at 120.
  • Reports indicate that landfall will occur at around 10PM ET (9PM CT) tonight just east of Pensacola, Florida.
  • Looking ahead to tomorrow, note that the eye will probably just have passed Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where Georgia is scheduled to play Alabama at 7:30PM ET (6:30 CT).
  • But who knows for sure what will happen.
  • As tailgating can begin at noon on the Alabama campus, there will almost certainly be chaos that afternoon.
  • My recommendation is that they postpone the game until Sunday.
  • More seriously, landfall will be near Navarre, Florida.
    • Located 25 miles east of Pensacola and 15 miles west of Fort Walton Beach.
    • Once a town of 1500 in 1970, the population must be around 45,000 today, and is the third-largest community in the Florida Panhandle.
    • Suffered terrible damage from Hurricanes Ivan (2004) and Dennis (2005).
    • Storm surge is the most serious problem from a hurricane.  According to Google AI:
Navarre, Florida, is experiencing significant waterfront and coastal developments spanning luxury residential communities, major commercial projects, and utility expansions along the Santa Rosa Sound and Navarre Beach.
  • The Northeast quadrant of a hurricane gets the more severe damage, meaning the coastline to Panama Beach.  Most of the tornados also occur in this region.  As this storm moves north, states like Georgia, thus, will get a whole lot rain.

As terrible as Category 3 Hurricane Isiais will be to the USA, there is Hurricane Simon in the East Pacific Ocean to become a Category 4 and threaten Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

In the West Pacific is Typhoon Koguma, headed straight for Japan.  Koguma just became a typhoon yesterday and today has already strengthened into a Category 3 at 115 MPH.  Will attain Category 4 strength by tomorrow.  However, this storm will the following day begin to make a right turn, eventually taking the path safely away from Japan.

Just as I was about to post this article, there was a flash report from the The New York Times:  Panama was hit by a 7.7 magnitude earthquake.  There is a TSUNAMI WATCH.

So on to TV and sports.  Yes, I know that the Women's National Basketball Association is also in a playoff period.  However, I elected to skip the NBA and NFL in this blog, so the WNBA now, too.   If I ever get fantasy teams in these sports, I will comment on them.  I once had these teams in baseball, basketball, football and golf.

There are no Major League Baseball playoff games today.

  • October 10, Saturday:  Chicago White Sox at Cleveland of Game 5 to decide who plays Tampa Bay.  8PM (ET) on TBS and HBO Max.
  • October 11, Sunday:  Los Angeles Dodgers at Milwaukee Brewers, for the National League Championship.  First team to win 4 games.

There is one huge NCAA football game this week.

  • #2 Georgia at #6 Alabama.
    • Alabama is favored by 1.5 points.
    • Alabama is 5-0, and the closest any team has come to them this year is Florida State, 50-36.
    • Georgia, also 5-0, and closest was against Vanderbilt, 38-14.
    • And yes, Hurricane Isaias could postpone this game.
  • #1 Texas, 8 points over Oklahoma, which has not had a good year.
  • #21 UCLA at #13 Oregon, favored by 11.5 points.
  • Arizona State has been blown out by Texas A&M (48-20) and Baylor (55-19), but is favored at home against Hawaii by 20.5 points.  Could end up worse.

I watched two films this week.  I've never back to back before saw two productions so opposite from each other.  Well there was that summer of 2023 when I went to Barbenheimer.

  • However, in this latest combo, one was intense, violent, horrific...with 439 deaths.
  • The other had two deaths and was, well, let me send you to a couple of reviewers.

@BIlbodad

Is it "sentimental and contrived" ?? Well yea. DUH. But masterfully done. If this doesn't move you to a tear or two. Check your pulse. Or go back to the Borg collective.

The films?

  • John Wick Chapter 4,  RT:  94/93.
    • Prime Video.
    • The killing went on and on for 3 hours.  As awful as the killings were, I think I actually fell asleep a couple of times.
    • How many have died in these four productions?
      • #1 (2014)  77.
      • #2  (2017)  128.
      • #3  (2019)  94
      • #4  (2023)  140.   Want to watch these deaths?  Click on this.
      • Total so far = 439
    • Will there be a #5?
      • Yes, but didn't he die in #4?
      • Yes, but there are ways he can be resurrected.
      • After all, here is the #5 trailer.
      • Actual #5 won't be released until 2028 or 2029.
    • Isn't Keanu Reeves getting old?
      • Was born in 1964 in Beirut, Lebanon.  Mother British, father from Hawaii (of Hawaiian, English, Chinese and Portuguese descent).
      • This is why he has a Hawaiian Name.  Keanu translates to cool breeze.
      • Turned 62 last month.
    • I decided to watch this film because I usually side with the audience over reviewers. This time, I think the reviewers were right.
    • The voice of Enzo (who narrates the film from his role as a dog) is Kevin Costner.  Named after the founder of Ferrari.  And, by the way, did you know that Ferrari, the company, refused to sell Justin Bieber  a car because he lacked the proper character to be an owner?  Enzo is a Golden Retriever, mostly played by Parker.
    • As much as I thought this film was weak, it was more enjoyable than John Wick 4.  These Wick films are excruciating.   He was a mere retired assassin in the first film.  Also had a Beagle puppy.
