This is October 13, 73 days till Christmas.  It will snow today in Hawaii.  No kidding!  The forecast is snow for Mauna Kea.  While it will not quite look like the above (view from Hilo), it will snow today.  However, we are expecting a high of 88 F in Honolulu, and I plan to go golfing.

Earlier this month I predicted that there will be a media pandemic about Ebola.  Surely enough, the biggest headline article this morning in the Honolulu Star Advertiser was INFECTION WORRIES ESCALATE.  Mind you, Ebola is scary.  TIME magazine (13 October 2014) reported that 375 health care workers in West Africa contracted the disease, and 211 died (as of September 23).  While the death rate from the swine flu was 0.02%, Ebola's is 47%.  I did make fun of the swine flu pandemic more than five years ago, for I did not think the worldwide fears were necessary.  Similarly, Ebola will in time be sufficiently controlled, primarily because the transmission is by contact with bodily fluids only, not the airborne potential of any flu.

For the second week in a row, Gone Girl had the largest weekend movie ticket sales.  It's not a great movie, but a good one.  I'll give away the whole thing by saying that the final scene was the most disconcerting.  But this should only spur you to go see the film yourself, for you will anticipate this ending and wonder why I said what I said.

Gone Girl is an American mystery directed by David Fincher from the 2012 best seller by Gillian Flynn of the same name.  You get an impression that the screenwriting was skewed to fool you, but more than anything else, this was excellent acting.  Rosamund Pike was brilliant and spooky as a brilliant, but psychologically deranged, wife.  Ben Affleck was equally outstanding as a hunk lacking in aptitude and attitude.  I would have added two more remarkable kills in addition to the truly gory one (this is rated R), for a couple that deserved that fate, but would not have thought about that ending, which epitomized the whole story, and was, brilliant.  Flynn was somewhat perplexed about this, and said there will be no sequel.

Rotten Tomatoes reviewers gave Gone Girl an 87% rating, and 91% of the audience liked it.  By the way, Rotten Tomatoes has John Wick, a film to be released this week with Keanu Reaves, Willem Dafoe and John Leguizamo, at 100%/98%.  When was the last time you saw a film rated so high?

Tropical Storm Ana formed to the southeast of the Big Island.  I guess this must be the FIRST storm of the 2014 season which developed in the Central Pacific.  The next will not be a "B," but will be Ela.  This is because the storms born in our region have Hawaiian names, and there are no B's, C.s and D's in the Hawaiian language.  Ana will strengthen into a hurricane and head straight for the Big Island, with possible landfall this weekend:

Computer models vary quite a bit:

In any case, most of them show Ana weakening into a tropical storm by the time it gets close to a Hawaiian island.
