The opening ceremonies were certainly colorful:

Alina Kabayeva was the final transition for the Olympic Torch:

Why is she noteworthy?  A former Olympic gymnast, she has been romantically linked to Vladimir Putin.  She passed on the torch to Vladislav Tretiak (hockey goalie) and Irina Rodnina (figure skater)--they have a combined six Winter Olympic medals--who lit the cauldron:

As you will watch the highlights tonight, don't want to give it all away, but I will tell you that Sage Kotsenburg won the first American gold:

I will always insert as appropriate in my Sochi postings one or more jokes.  Here from Jimmy Fallon:

"On Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin said gay people at the Olympics should not fear for their safety despite the country's anti-gay laws. He said they should fear for their safety because they're in Russia."

"Germany just unveiled its rainbow-colored Olympic uniforms, which seem to be a subtle protest against Russia's anti-gay laws. You can tell how much the world has changed when Germans are the ones who are saying, 'Discrimination is just wrong."

Stray dogs and mascots stories to come.  By now you've noticed that the mascots are the world's biggest hare, a polar bear and a what?

Leopard.  Also, it was reported that a stray dog appeared during the Opening Ceremonies:
